31/ATLAS Reaches Closest Approach to Earth After Journey From Interstellar Space

31ATLAS interstellar space closest approach

The interstellar comet 31/ATLAS has officially reached its closest approach to Earth, marking a fleeting milestone in humanity’s study of visitors from interstellar space.

Early this morning, the icy object passed within approximately 168 million miles (270 million kilometers) of our planet, giving astronomers a rare opportunity to observe material that originated around another star system before it begins its long departure from the solar system.

31/ATLAS Rare Visitor from Beyond Our Solar System

Discovered in July, interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS—often referred to simply as 31/ATLAS—is only the third confirmed object known to have entered our solar system from interstellar space. Since its discovery, scientists around the world have closely tracked its motion, brightness, and composition as it traveled inward toward the sun and reached its closest approach to Earth.

After this pass, 31/ATLAS will continue outward through the solar system. Astronomers expect it to pass near Jupiter in early 2026, cross the orbits of Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune by 2028, and then exit the solar system entirely—never to return.

NASA Addresses Online Speculation

As 31/ATLAS brightened during its approach, public interest surged. During a recent 43-day government shutdown, when NASA was unable to comment publicly or release new imagery, online rumors flourished, with some speculating that the object could be alien technology.

Once the shutdown ended, NASA held a detailed briefing drawing on observations from more than 20 missions across the solar system. The agency made its conclusion unmistakably clear.

“We very much want to find signs of life in the universe,” said NASA Associate Administrator Amit Kshatriya. “But 3I/ATLAS is a comet.”

NASA emphasized that all available data point to a natural origin, consistent with icy bodies formed around distant stars and ejected into interstellar space.

Unlocking the Comet’s Chemical Secrets in Interstellar Space

Scientists are racing to collect data before the comet fades from view. Researchers are particularly focused on its spectral fingerprint, which may reveal clues about the composition of the star system where 31/ATLAS formed.

Observations from the European Space Agency’s XMM-Newton observatory and the Japanese-led X-Ray Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission (XRISM) detected a massive X-ray glow stretching roughly 250,000 miles (400,000 kilometers) from the comet’s nucleus. Scientists believe this glow is produced as gases from the comet interact with the solar wind, offering insights into how objects from interstellar space behave in our sun’s high-energy environment.

How to Watch 31/ATLAS One Last Time

Although the comet has passed its closest approach, skywatchers still have one final chance to see it. The Virtual Telescope Project, hosted by astronomer Gianluca Masi, will hold a free livestream starting at 11 p.m. EST (0400 GMT) and running until 1 a.m. EST.

The event is weather dependent, but viewers can tune in here:

More information about the Virtual Telescope Project is available at:

As 31/ATLAS fades into the darkness of interstellar space, scientists and enthusiasts alike are already looking forward to the next rare visitor from beyond our cosmic neighborhood.
