In a strategic move that underscores the intensifying race to secure advanced artificial intelligence systems, OpenAI acquires Promptfoo, a cybersecurity startup known for its tools designed to test and safeguard complex AI models.

The deal, announced Monday by OpenAI, brings the entire Promptfoo team into the organization as the AI powerhouse continues expanding its ecosystem amid fierce competition across the tech industry.

Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

A Security Boost for AI Agents

The startup’s technology will be integrated into OpenAI’s Frontier platform, which focuses on building and managing sophisticated AI agents capable of interacting with real-world data and digital systems.

According to Ian Webster, CEO of Promptfoo, the partnership arrives at a critical moment for the AI industry.

“As AI agents become more connected to real data and systems, securing and validating them is more challenging and important than ever,” Webster said in a statement.

He added that the acquisition will accelerate efforts to strengthen safeguards for organizations deploying real-world AI tools.

“Joining OpenAI allows us to move faster,” Webster said, noting that the goal is to deliver stronger security, safety and governance capabilities to teams building AI-powered systems.

Open-Source Tools to Continue

Even after the acquisition, OpenAI confirmed it will continue developing Promptfoo’s widely used open-source platform.

The project enables developers to test AI prompts and agent behavior, compare performance across different large language models and evaluate outputs across platforms.

Developers currently use the system to benchmark models such as:

• Claude

• Gemini

The tool has become popular among engineers building applications that rely on large language models, helping ensure reliability and reduce vulnerabilities before systems reach users.

OpenAI’s Rapid Expansion

The acquisition reflects a broader strategy by OpenAI to expand its technical capabilities as competition intensifies across the artificial intelligence sector.

The company, led by CEO Sam Altman, has been aggressively acquiring startups and recruiting high-profile developers in recent months.

The AI leader is locked in a fierce technological race with companies such as Anthropic, Google, and Meta.

In January, OpenAI purchased healthcare technology startup Torch for roughly $60 million, according to CNBC.

That move followed another acquisition announced in October when OpenAI bought Software Applications, the developer behind an AI interface known as Sky designed for Apple Mac users.

Recruiting the Minds Behind AI Infrastructure

OpenAI has also strengthened its technical bench through high-profile hires.

In February, the company brought on developer Peter Steinberger, creator of the widely used OpenClaw.

Steinberger’s work has been influential in helping developers build AI agents capable of interacting autonomously with digital systems.

Altman praised the developer’s vision in a post on X.

“He is a genius with a lot of amazing ideas about the future of very smart agents interacting with each other to do very useful things for people,” Altman wrote at the time.

Altman added that such capabilities are expected to become central to OpenAI’s product ecosystem.

Startup Backed by Major Investors

Promptfoo had already attracted attention in the venture capital world before the acquisition.

The startup announced in July that it raised $18.4 million in a Series A funding round led by Insight Partners, with participation from venture capital giant Andreessen Horowitz.

According to data from PitchBook, Promptfoo employs 11 people and has raised $22.68 million in total funding, reaching a post-money valuation of $85.5 million as of July 2025.

Andreessen Horowitz has increasingly focused on infrastructure and defense-related technology investments.

In January, the firm announced it had raised $15 billion in funding tied to its broader initiative focused on what it calls “American Dynamism.”

Of that total, the venture capital firm said $6.75 billion would be dedicated to a growth fund, while two additional $1.7 billion funds would support applications and infrastructure investments.

AI’s Security Race Intensifies

The move highlights a growing reality across the AI industry: as artificial intelligence systems become more powerful and deeply integrated into businesses and government infrastructure, security testing is rapidly becoming as critical as the technology itself.

With Promptfoo’s tools now entering OpenAI’s ecosystem, the acquisition signals another step in the company’s effort to fortify the digital scaffolding supporting the next generation of AI agents.

In the increasingly high-stakes world of artificial intelligence, building smarter systems is only half the battle — ensuring they behave safely may prove just as important.
