Spring may be in full bloom, but forecasters are already peering into the storm-laden months ahead. The latest Colorado State University hurricane season forecast paints a complex picture—one shaped by competing forces in the atmosphere and ocean, like a tug-of-war between calm and chaos.

A Slightly Below-Average Season Expected

Researchers at Colorado State University are projecting a somewhat quieter Atlantic hurricane season than recent years.

Their forecast calls for:

• 13 named storms (including tropical storms and hurricanes)
• 6 hurricanes
• 2 major hurricanes reaching Category 3 or higher

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June through November, but early indicators suggest this year may diverge from the hyperactive pattern seen over much of the past decade.

Only one season since 2016—2025—has fallen below average. That year recorded 13 named storms and five hurricanes, including the devastating Category 5 Hurricane Melissa, which left a trail of destruction across Jamaica.

Interestingly, both CSU and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration had predicted more storms than actually formed last year, highlighting the inherent uncertainty in long-range forecasting.

Forecasting Challenges in a Warming World

Seasonal predictions are never exact science. While CSU relies on refined climate models rather than guesswork, nature often rewrites the script.

In 2023, for instance, CSU initially predicted a below-average season—but record-breaking ocean warmth fueled above-normal storm activity, defying expectations.

Still, lead researcher Phil Klotzbach said this year’s signals provide slightly more confidence than usual.

El Niño Emerges as Key Driver

At the heart of the Colorado State University hurricane season forecast is the anticipated return of El Niño.

The current La Niña pattern has faded, transitioning to neutral conditions. El Niño is expected to develop later this spring and strengthen by mid-summer—just in time for the peak hurricane window between mid-August and mid-October.

This climate pattern, marked by warmer waters in the equatorial Pacific, reshapes atmospheric conditions worldwide. One of its most critical effects is increased wind shear over the Atlantic—a disruptive force that can weaken storms or prevent them from forming altogether.

However, El Niño is no guarantee of calm seas. During 2023, storms still thrived despite strong wind shear, fueled by unusually warm ocean waters.

Ocean Temperatures Add Complexity

While El Niño hints at reduced activity, ocean temperatures are telling a more complicated story.

Waters in the western tropical Atlantic—near the Caribbean—are warmer than usual, a signal often linked to busier hurricane seasons. Meanwhile, parts of the central and eastern Atlantic remain slightly cooler than average, typically associated with quieter conditions.

These contrasting signals create uncertainty, as sea surface temperatures are the lifeblood of hurricanes.

As the oceans continue to warm into late summer, they will reach peak temperatures around early September—the prime fuel window for storm development.

Scientists warn that climate change, driven by fossil fuel emissions, is heating oceans and increasing the likelihood of rapid storm intensification.

Last year offered a stark example: four hurricanes intensified explosively, with three—Erin, Humberto, and Melissa—reaching Category 5 strength.

Uncertainty Still Looms

If ocean temperatures rise more than expected, they could offset El Niño’s calming influence, potentially opening the door to a more active season.

“There is still a lot that can change between now and the peak of the season,” Klotzbach cautioned, underscoring the fragile balance that will define the months ahead.
