A quiet Memorial Day afternoon in a Tucson-area neighborhood turned into a scene of horror when a mother was gunned down in her own driveway, her two young children just moments away from witnessing their father's final act of violence.

Marana Police confirmed Wednesday that the deaths of Mikaela Durfey, 36, and Brian Schnurr, 37, a divorced couple with two young children, were the result of a murder-suicide that unfolded across two locations within a single mile on Monday, May 25.

Around 5 p.m., officers responded to reports of a shooting at a home in the 6700 block of West Alegria Drive, in the Desert Vista neighborhood near Silverbell and Cortaro. When they arrived, they found Durfey shot to death in the driveway of her own home.

Schnurr, her ex-husband, was immediately identified as the suspect. Officers began tracking his vehicle, a blue Dodge Challenger, which was located minutes later in the parking lot of a popular steakhouse less than a mile away, on the 8500 block of North Silverbell Road.

What happened next left witnesses shaken.

13 News reporter Dan Marries was on scene as Schnurr's vehicle was surrounded by armed officers. Two MPD cruisers boxed in the Challenger, and inside, remarkably, were the couple's two young children, unharmed.

Officers pulled the children to safety.

Then, two armed officers were seen sprinting into the desert scrubland bordering the parking lot. That's where they found Schnurr, dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Investigators believe Schnurr shot Durfey at their former family home, then drove less than a mile to the steakhouse parking lot with his own children in the vehicle. He left them alone in the car before disappearing into the desert.

The children were not physically harmed.

Back on West Alegria Drive, a neighborhood that had known decades of quiet suburban life woke Tuesday morning to something it had never seen before: a memorial.

A vase of flowers. A balloon. A single candle. Placed in front of the home where Durfey died.

Neighbors, clearly shaken, spoke to 13 News but declined to appear on camera. Several said they heard multiple gunshots around 5 p.m. Monday, sounds that, at the time, they may not have fully understood.

Charles Wipperman, a longtime Desert Vista resident who lives just a few doors from the crime scene, said he didn't hear the shots, but the weight of what happened was not lost on him.

"30 years we've lived here," he said. "I can't think of anything sad, anything bad that has happened until then. Anytime somebody passes away, it's sad. Whether it's a friend or a family member, when someone is murdered, no matter who it is, that is horrible."

Still, Wipperman said the tragedy won't drive him from the community he loves.

"I'm not going to move out of this neighborhood. I think this neighborhood has been very nice. It's just a nice, friendly community, and this is a very sad and shocking event to happen."

Court records show Durfey had filed for divorce from Schnurr in July 2025. The two had built professional lives in the Tucson area. Durfey was a licensed counselor, while Schnurr operated as a chiropractor in the region.

Two careers. Two children. A divorce filing less than a year old. And now, two dead.

The children are believed to be in the care of family members. Their names have not been released.
