A cold case that haunted investigators for over three decades has finally been cracked, thanks to cutting-edge forensic genealogy technology and DNA evidence that sat waiting for science to catch up.

Albert L. "Buddy" Zigler, 70, of Caseyville, Illinois, now faces two counts of first-degree murder in the 1993 death of Randy Gail Sperino, a 34-year-old woman found beaten beyond recognition in a rural field outside Granite City. Prosecutors say he eventually confessed to picking her up, bludgeoning her with a metal bat or steel pipe, and dumping her body like trash in an unincorporated field.

The arrest, announced Tuesday by Madison County State's Attorney Tom Haine, marks one of the most dramatic cold case breakthroughs in the region's history.

33 Years of Silence, Then a Confession

On November 9, 1993, Sperino's body was discovered in a field in unincorporated Granite City. Court records describe the cause of death as "massive blunt force trauma to the head." Her killer left behind no obvious leads and seemingly disappeared into thin air.

For decades, investigators refused to walk away. They chased leads, re-interviewed witnesses and repeatedly tested DNA evidence recovered during the original investigation. Case after case, the identity of the killer remained just out of reach.

Then forensic genealogy changed everything.

The Technology That Refused to Let a Killer Walk Free

Forensic genealogical DNA analysis, the same advanced technique that helped crack several other notorious cold cases across the country, traces biological family connections through genetic evidence, effectively building a suspect's family tree from a single DNA sample.

Madison County Sheriff Jeff Connor saw the potential long before it was widely adopted. According to Haine, Connor made the decision to pursue the technology seven years ago, when it was still just emerging as an investigative tool.

"Seven years ago, Sheriff Connor had the foresight to know that a new investigative tool, even though it was just emerging, might be able to provide a breakthrough in this investigation," Haine said. "The sheriff and his investigators never wavered in seeking justice in this case."

That persistence paid off.

A Confession and a Courtroom

Court documents allege Zigler admitted to investigators that he picked Sperino up in Granite City, transported her to his residence, beat her with a metal bat or steel pipe, and then dumped her body in the field where she was later found.

The charges are severe. Zigler faces two counts of first-degree murder for allegedly and intentionally beating Sperino with a bludgeon, causing her death. Prosecutors are pushing hard to keep him locked up pending trial, arguing the offense is both violent and non-probationable.

At his initial court appearance Tuesday before Associate Judge James Hackett, Zigler was appointed a public defender. A detention hearing was scheduled for Wednesday afternoon. An arrest warrant filed in Madison County Circuit Court confirms he remains in custody.

"Nothing Can Erase the Pain"

For Sperino's family, who spent more than 33 years without answers, the arrest brings a painful but long-awaited turning point.

"While nothing can erase the pain experienced by Miss Sperino's loved ones, we hope this development provides some answers after so many years," Haine said in a statement.

The State's Attorney also made clear that the breakthrough was not just about technology. It was about the relentless commitment of the investigators who refused to let the case die.

"These tools are only effective because of the dedication, persistence, and professionalism of investigators who are willing to revisit evidence, follow leads, knock on doors, conduct interviews and continue pursuing the truth, no matter how much time has passed," Haine said.

"This case demonstrates the extraordinary value of modern investigative tools such as forensic genealogical DNA," he added. "Advances in technology and science are creating opportunities to solve cases that, years ago, might never have been solved."

The Madison County Sheriff's Office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
