A lunar eclipse happens when Earth positions itself directly between the sun and the moon, blocking sunlight from reaching the lunar surface either partially or completely. This time around, more than 96% of the moon fell under Earth's darkest shadow, known as the umbra, according to NASA — a coverage level substantial enough to classify the event as a "deep partial eclipse," even without crossing fully into total territory.

That eerie red-orange glow isn't some cosmic coincidence — it's simple physics playing out on a planetary scale. Earth's atmosphere acts like a filter, letting reddish wavelengths of light slip through while bending other colors away entirely, the same optical trick responsible for a fiery sunset here on the ground.

This eclipse, the second and final one of the year, began around 9:23 p.m. EDT Thursday and continued until roughly 3:02 a.m. EDT Friday — a stretch lasting nearly six hours from start to finish. The eclipse reached its peak intensity at 12:13 a.m. EDT, the moment when 96.3% of the moon sat cloaked in Earth's shadow, according to NASA data.

Looking Ahead to the Next Skywatching Events

Anyone hoping to catch another eclipse soon should temper their expectations slightly. While 2027 will bring three lunar eclipses, all of them will be the far subtler penumbral variety — the kind that barely dims the moon's brightness rather than transforming its color dramatically. The next true total lunar eclipse won't arrive until Dec. 31, 2028, meaning tonight's blood moon has set a high bar that won't be matched again for a while.

Solar Eclipses Still on the Horizon

Solar eclipse enthusiasts, however, have more to look forward to sooner. Two solar eclipses are scheduled for 2027: a "ring of fire" annular eclipse on Feb. 6, followed by a total solar eclipse on Aug. 2 — both offering their own distinct brand of celestial drama for anyone willing to plan ahead and look up at just the right moment.
