Six U.S. Soldiers Died in an Iranian Drone Strike in Kuwait. Now Families and a Senator Are Demanding to Know Why They Were Left Exposed

WASHINGTON, D.C. — More than seven months after an Iranian drone killed six American soldiers at a makeshift operations center in Kuwait, families and survivors are asserting that commanders knew the site was dangerously vulnerable, and a U.S. senator is pressing the military for the full, unredacted record. The accounts, reported this week as the Iran war continues to spread across the region, raise hard questions about force protection, medical readiness and accountability for the deadliest single attack on U.S. troops in the conflict so far.

What Happened at Port Shuaiba

On March 1, 2026, the second day of the conflict between the United States and Iran, an Iranian Shahed drone struck a temporary facility at Port Shuaiba, a civilian seaport and industrial area just south of Kuwait City. The site was more than 10 miles from Camp Arifjan, the main Army base in the country. Six Army Reserve soldiers assigned to a supply and logistics unit were killed, and at least 30 others were wounded, according to a letter from Sen. Tammy Baldwin, D-Wis., to U.S. Central Command.

The facility was a shipping-container-style tactical operations center surrounded by oil storage tanks and refineries, with minimal defenses. According to reporting at the time, one soldier's spouse said the troops had been dispersed because they feared the base they had been on would be attacked.

What Families and Survivors Say

Relatives and survivors now say commanders understood the location was particularly vulnerable to a drone strike, according to the latest reporting summarized in this week's national security briefings. They contend the soldiers had been moved into a position that U.S. officials had reason to fear Iran might target.

The Pentagon has disputed claims about an inadequate medical response. Early in the war, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth described the site as a tactical operations center that a projectile managed to get past air defenses to hit. Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said the secure facility had been fortified with six-foot walls and was covered by extensive air defenses. U.S. Central Command declined further comment, citing an ongoing investigation.

A Senator's Demands

In an August 5 letter to Adm. Brad Cooper, the commander of U.S. Central Command, Baldwin asked the military to publicly release the findings of the U.S. Army Central investigation into the attack and to give Congress the complete, unredacted investigation along with its underlying documentation and any classified reviews. She set an August 18 deadline for a response.

Baldwin also asked why medical care was not available at the site on March 1 and why requests for supplies were denied. She further asked whether medical access was considered before soldiers were repositioned there. According to her letter, wounded service members had to travel to Kuwaiti civilian hospitals for treatment, and she suggested that some lives may have been lost that could have been saved. Among the injured were service members from Wisconsin.

The senator alleged that soldiers were relocated to Port Shuaiba days before the war began even though force protection assessments showed the site was not adequately defended. She also wrote that U.S. intelligence had identified the facility as a likely Iranian target, and that requests for additional air defense systems and medical supplies were not granted.

A War Still Widening

The renewed scrutiny arrives as the Iran conflict shows no sign of winding down. Saudi-led forces this week recaptured towns near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait from Houthi fighters, while Saudi airports in Jazan and Najran were attacked. The U.S. also moved bombers out of Royal Air Force Fairford in England based on intelligence about possible Iranian drone attacks, a reminder that the same drone threat that struck Kuwait remains a live danger to American forces.

Meanwhile, shipping through the Strait of Hormuz continues under a heavy U.S. military commitment, and gas prices at home remain a political flashpoint heading into the November midterms.

What It Means for Americans

For the families of the six fallen soldiers, the question is not only what happened but whether it was preventable. Reserve units like the one hit at Port Shuaiba are drawn from communities across the country, and their deployment decisions rest on the trust that commanders have weighed risk against mission. If the investigation finds that warnings were ignored, it could trigger a reckoning on how the military positions logistics and support troops, who are often less protected than front-line forces.

The dispute also tests congressional oversight. Lawmakers from both parties have a stake in learning whether supplies and defenses were denied and who made those decisions. A public accounting could shape funding for air defense and medical support in the next defense bill, and it may influence how voters judge the administration's handling of the war.

What Comes Next

Central Command has not publicly released the findings of its investigation, and it was not immediately clear whether Baldwin received the material she requested by her deadline. Families say they will keep pressing for answers. Until the military opens its files, the central question hanging over Port Shuaiba will remain unanswered: whether six American soldiers were lost to an enemy's skill, or to avoidable decisions made long before the drone arrived.
