Humana and UnitedHealthcare Cancel Medicare Advantage Plans Affecting Nearly 1 Million People

Humana and UnitedHealthcare cancel Medicare Advantage

Nearly 1 million Americans are facing a shake-up in their health coverage as Humana and UnitedHealthcare move to discontinue Medicare Advantage plans, forcing older adults and other beneficiaries to reconsider how they access medical care.

The two insurers are among the largest private health insurance providers serving older Americans in the United States. According to Fortune, the cuts largely target Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) plans, which generally give members greater flexibility when choosing doctors and medical providers.

The scale of the changes is substantial. Approximately 600,000 Humana customers are expected to lose their current coverage options, while another 390,000 UnitedHealth Group members will be affected. Together, the decisions could disrupt coverage for nearly 1 million people who may need to find alternatives during an already consequential period for health care planning.

Both companies intend to offer replacement plans to most affected members. However, those alternatives may come with higher costs and fewer benefits, potentially leaving some beneficiaries weighing tighter budgets against the need to maintain access to familiar doctors and services.

Humana and UnitedHealthcare Cancel Medicare Advantage Plans Amid Cost Pressures

The withdrawals come as insurers confront growing medical expenses and pressure to protect profitability. Fortune reported that the decisions were driven by corporate profit considerations, with UnitedHealth facing unexpectedly high health care utilization and rising medical costs.

Those financial pressures have had consequences beyond insurance operations. UnitedHealth's stock value declined in 2025 as investors reacted to the company's mounting medical expenses, underscoring how higher-than-anticipated demand for care can squeeze insurers' financial performance.

For beneficiaries, however, the business calculations carry direct consequences. A plan that once offered a convenient combination of provider access and benefits may disappear, leaving members to compare new premiums, out-of-pocket expenses, covered services and physician networks.

Replacement Coverage Could Mean Higher Costs and Fewer Benefits

Although replacement plans are expected to be available to most affected members, switching coverage is not necessarily a simple exchange. A new plan may have a different network of doctors, altered benefits or higher expenses, requiring beneficiaries to review the details carefully before choosing an alternative.

For older adults managing ongoing medical needs, even a change in provider access or prescription coverage can make a difference. Members who rely on particular specialists or established treatment arrangements may need to confirm whether those services remain covered under a replacement option.

The changes also highlight a broader tension in the Medicare Advantage market: insurers must manage medical spending, while beneficiaries depend on coverage that remains affordable and practical to use.

Medicare Covers More Than 70 Million Americans

The impact extends into a vast federal health insurance system. More than 70 million people are enrolled in Medicare, including Americans aged 65 and older and certain younger people with disabilities.

Medicare provides health coverage through different arrangements, including traditional Medicare and private insurance plans approved by the federal government.

What Medicare Advantage Means for Beneficiaries

Medicare Advantage, also known as Medicare Part C, allows beneficiaries to receive their Medicare benefits through federally approved private insurance companies. Many plans also include prescription drug coverage under Medicare Part D, combining medical and medication benefits within a single plan.

PPO plans are one type of Medicare Advantage coverage. They generally offer members the ability to see providers outside their preferred network, although doing so can cost more. That flexibility can be especially important for beneficiaries who want a wider choice of doctors or need specialized treatment.

With Humana and UnitedHealthcare withdrawing plans affecting nearly 1 million people, beneficiaries may need to reassess whether their current coverage will remain available and which alternatives best fit their medical and financial needs.

For those affected, the immediate challenge is understanding what is changing, comparing replacement options and checking whether preferred doctors, medications and services remain covered. The decisions made by two major insurers could reshape coverage choices for a significant number of Americans, turning the next plan-selection period into a critical moment for their health care budgets and access to treatment.
