Patterson, a native of Fort Stewart, Georgia, died after falling during a rappelling demonstration from the stadium’s ceiling. This happened before a University of Texas at San Antonio football game against Navy.

He was 15 years into his Air Force career and served as a Tactical Air Control Party instructor. His death has prompted an outpouring of grief and support for his wife, Niki Patterson, and their two young sons.

A Tragic Accident at the Alamodome

The Alamodome is a multipurpose stadium in downtown San Antonio known for hosting football games, major sporting events, concerts and other large gatherings. Its expansive interior and high ceiling allow for large-scale productions and military demonstrations, including rappelling displays in which participants descend from elevated structures using ropes and specialized equipment.

Patterson was participating in a demonstration alongside three other service members when the fatal fall occurred. The rappelling descent reportedly began from approximately 170 feet above the stadium floor.

Authorities have not publicly established the cause of the accident, and the circumstances remain under investigation. The incident has left Patterson’s family, military colleagues and friends mourning the loss of a service member whose life extended well beyond his uniform.

‘An Amazing Father’ and Devoted Husband

Patterson’s mother described him as a loving family man whose commitment to his wife and children defined his life.

“He was an amazing father, loved his wife with his whole heart, was a Christian man who was loved deeply,” his mother told KTUL.

Those who knew Patterson said they wanted his legacy to reflect his service, friendship and devotion to his family. Tyler Hsu, a friend who spoke to KSAT, said he hoped Patterson would be remembered first as a soldier, then as a great friend and, above all, as a family man.

Breanna Valdez, another friend, described the heartbreak of learning about his death and the difficulty of losing someone she considered a good friend.

Military Community Rallies Around His Family

Patterson’s death has inspired a significant fundraising effort to help his wife and children navigate life without him. A GoFundMe campaign established by Niki Patterson’s brother has raised nearly $150,000, according to the information reported following the tragedy. Donations are intended to help the family manage expenses and provide stability for the children.

The Tactical Air Control Party Foundation also pledged continued assistance. Patterson had served as a Tactical Air Control Party instructor, part of a specialized Air Force community that supports military operations by coordinating airpower with ground forces.

Foundation leader Ramiro Villalobos told KTUL that the organization would stand beside Patterson’s children for years to come.

“We’re there because dad can’t be,” Villalobos said, describing how members of the community would help the boys as they grow up.

He also said the organization intended to help provide financial support for the children’s future education, whether they pursue college, vocational training or another path.

Friends Gather to Honor Patterson’s Life

On Tuesday, Oct. 20, friends and family gathered at the Stout House bar in San Antonio for a memorial and balloon release. The gathering reflected the personal connections Patterson had built outside the military. He regularly played poker there on Tuesday nights, making the venue a meaningful place for friends to come together and remember him.

For those who knew Patterson, the memorial was an opportunity to celebrate the person behind the uniform: a husband, father, friend and fellow airman whose loss has deeply affected his community.

As investigators continue working to determine what happened during the Alamodome demonstration, Patterson’s family and friends are focused on preserving his memory and supporting the two sons he leaves behind. The military community’s pledge of long-term assistance offers one measure of comfort amid a devastating loss.

Patterson’s legacy, those who loved him say, will be defined not only by his years of service but also by the love he gave his family and the lasting relationships he built throughout his life.
