Biden’s Memory Issues Detailed

Hur's investigation did not recommend criminal charges against Biden, despite uncovering evidence of his retention and disclosure of classified information post-vice presidency.

He cited concerns about the perception problem a prosecution might face due to Biden's memory issues. 

"At trial, Mr. Biden would likely present himself to a jury, as he did during our interview of him, as a sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory," Hur’s report claimed.

"Based on our direct interactions with and observations of him, he is someone for whom many jurors will want to identify reasonable doubt. It would be difficult to convince a jury that they should convict him-by then a former president well into his eighties-of a serious felony that requires a mental state of willfulness," Hur added.

He noted instances where Biden's memory appeared significantly limited, such as his inability to recall when his vice presidency ended or when his son, Beau Biden, passed away.

According to the report, Biden's memory lapses were evident during interviews with a ghostwriter for a memoir and in private sessions with Hur's team.

The report noted at least 9 lapses included forgetting key events during his vice presidency and struggling to recall details of important debates, such as the Afghanistan conflict.

The report drew sharp criticism from Biden and his legal team. The President’s attorney’s Bob Bauer and Richard Sauber criticized Hur's emphasis on Biden's memory issues. And claimed they were inappropriate and politically motivated.

Embarrassing Press Event

On Thursday Biden held a press conference to denounce the report.

He was livid about Hur's reference to his son's death, expressing indignation at the suggestion that he needed reminders about such personal matters. 

But Biden's remarks, including a recent gaffe where he mistakenly referred to the president of Egypt as the president of Mexico, added fuel to the ongoing debate about his cognitive abilities.

Republicans seized on Hur's focus on Biden's memory to cast doubt on his fitness for office. 

Public opinion polls have indicated widespread skepticism about Biden's age and mental acuity, contrasting with former President Donald Trump's comparatively sharper image. Biden is 81. Former President Trump is 77.

Despite the public scrutiny, Biden has consistently defended his fitness for office, pointing to his extensive political experience. 

As the debate over Biden's memory continues, it raises broader questions about the intersection of age, cognition, and political leadership.
