Bill Belichick, the legendary coach who guided the New England Patriots to six Super Bowl titles, is now facing one of the toughest challenges of his storied career — leading the University of North Carolina football program. 

After being ousted from the Patriots in 2023, the 75-year-old coach took over the Tar Heels in December 2024, but his tenure has been mired in controversy, questionable decisions, and growing frustration from fans and players alike.

His autobiography, "The Art of Winning: Lessons from a Life in Football," came out in May.  And he’s been criticized for promoting the book more than his team.

A New Chapter — and Old Habits

Belichick’s arrival in Chapel Hill was initially met with excitement. Many hoped his NFL success would translate into college dominance. However, critics argue that the veteran coach has failed to adapt to the college environment, bringing with him the same rigid approach and personal feuds that defined his later Patriots years.

One columnist noted, “You don’t fly off to Nantucket with your girlfriend during the bye week when your team is failing on practically every front.”

Belichick’s 24-year-old girlfriend, Jordon Hudson, has drawn media attention after appearing frequently at practices and shutting down questions about their relationship. Her presence on the sidelines — along with Belichick’s decision to feature her in promotional material — has fueled perceptions that his focus lies elsewhere.

Feuds, Egos, and Fractured Priorities

According to Yahoo Sports, Belichick’s notorious feuds have followed him to UNC. Inside Carolina reported that the university’s social media team was allegedly ordered not to post highlights of former Tar Heel quarterback Drake Maye’s performance for the Buffalo Bills because Belichick barred Patriots scouts from the UNC facility.

Belichick admitted, “It’s clear I’m not welcome there around their facility, and so they’re not welcome at ours. It’s pretty simple.”

Observers saw that statement as a stunning example of ego overshadowing leadership. “There are only 32 NFL teams,” one reporter wrote. “How does it serve the players or the program to ban one of them from practice because the coach has a grudge?”

Internal Chaos and Coaching Nepotism

Belichick’s staffing decisions have also sparked criticism. “Making Steve Belichick the defensive coordinator and Brian Belichick the defensive backs coach? Good for the Belichicks, bad for North Carolina,” wrote Yahoo Sports. “Making Matt Lombardi the quarterbacks coach? Good for the Lombardis, bad for North Carolina.”

Even the team’s pro day — traditionally a showcase for players entering the NFL draft — went unattended by Belichick. Instead, he and general manager Mike Lombardi reportedly focused on assembling their “own team,” leaving players and alumni feeling alienated.

Decline on the Field

Under Belichick’s leadership, North Carolina has lost to its three Power Five opponents by an average of 29 points. Fans now question whether his NFL-style management is compatible with college football. 

As one observer put it, “Maybe we shouldn’t have expected these guys to understand what’s important in college football when they’ve spent every day since demonstrating clearly that they do not.”

Belichick’s once-untouchable reputation is taking hits from every angle — from poor performance to off-field distractions. For North Carolina fans, it’s become clear that the program existed long before him — and will continue long after he’s gone.
