Broken Plea Reveals the Turmoil of the Idaho Murders Case as Mother Defends Son

Broken Plea Idaho Murders

The upcoming true-crime book “Broken Plea” is shedding new light on one of the most disturbing criminal cases in recent memory. The Idaho murders left an emotional and psychological aftermath experienced by the family of convicted killer Bryan Kohberger.

According to newly revealed FBI interview transcripts, Kohberger’s mother refused to believe her son was responsible for the brutal slayings of four University of Idaho students, calling his arrest a devastating mistake.

The book, Broken Plea: The Explosive Search for Truth Behind the Idaho Murders, authored by Christopher Whitcomb, dives deep into the investigation and the emotional responses of those closest to the accused.

"Angel Son" Commits Idaho Murders

Among its most striking revelations are the words of Kohberger’s mother, Maryann, who described her son as her “angel” and insisted to FBI agents that he was incapable of committing such heinous acts.

On the night of Kohberger’s arrest in December 2022, federal agents entered the family’s Pennsylvania home. According to transcripts obtained by the Daily Mail, Maryann Kohberger immediately rejected the allegations.

“He’s my angel,” she reportedly said. “My son would not do this. I will stake my life on that.”

During questioning, she portrayed her son as a quiet and academically focused individual. She said he was a graduate student at Washington State University, Kohberger maintained a 3.8 GPA and lived a relatively isolated lifestyle, without close friendships or romantic relationships. His mother described him as a “homebody” who enjoyed outdoor activities like running and hiking.

Broken Plea Details the Crimes That Shocked a Nation

Despite investigators pressing her about any potential warning signs, she remained resolute. “Never, ever, ever,” she said when asked if he had shown violent tendencies. “There’s a mistake, something is wrong somewhere.”

The case centers on the November 13, 2022, killings of four University of Idaho students: Xana Kernodle, Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, and Ethan Chapin. The victims were found brutally stabbed in their off-campus home in Moscow, Idaho—a crime that stunned the nation and triggered an intense manhunt.

Kohberger later admitted to committing the murders, ultimately accepting a plea deal that spared him the death penalty. He is now serving four consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole following proceedings at the Ada County Courthouse.

Disturbing Details of Idaho Murders Emerge

One particularly chilling detail from the transcripts involves a knife. Maryann Kohberger told investigators it had been her suggestion that her son carry a knife while hiking.

She said the knife was for protection against wildlife, such as bears. She maintained she did not know whether he had ever purchased one. Authorities later confirmed that a knife was the weapon used in the killings.

Despite the mounting evidence, Maryann said nothing seemed unusual about her son’s behavior when he returned home for the holidays prior to his arrest.

Fallout Continues for Broken Plea

Kohberger’s decision to accept a plea deal in 2025 brought closure to the legal process but left many questions unanswered. Families of the victims expressed frustration and anger, particularly over the lack of a clear motive.

For them, the plea agreement—which eliminated the possibility of capital punishment—felt like an incomplete form of justice. The emotional divide between the victims’ families and Kohberger’s supporters underscores the broader societal tensions surrounding high-profile criminal cases.
