Iranian Government Holds Rally as War With U.S. and Israel Continues Iranian Government Mobilizes Supporters The Iranian Government organized its largest rally since the war with the United States and Israel began, drawing hundreds of thousands of people into the streets of Tehran on Friday as authorities sought to demonstrate national unity and military readiness. The event came amid worsening economic pressure, disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and continuing tensions with anti-government forces. Iranian state media reported that more than 600,000 people had registered for a campaign known as “Janfaday-e Iran,” or “those who sacrifice their lives for Iran.” Authorities said more than 1 million people could eventually participate in military training. The Associated Press reported that state television estimated more than 300,000 people were in Tehran for Friday’s demonstration. Participants marched through central Tehran carrying Iranian flags. Some wore military uniforms, while military equipment, including drones and anti-aircraft systems, was displayed during the event. Volunteers Prepare for Military Training The campaign would provide limited military training to volunteers who could serve as an additional layer of security alongside Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and Basij militia. Basij chief Hossein Taeb told the crowd that the volunteers would be prepared for what he called “full-fledged defense.” Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and senior military officials attended the rally. Some demonstrators chanted “Death to America” and “Death to Israel,” while others stepped on U.S. and Israeli flags. The rally’s size and organization provided Iranian authorities with an opportunity to project strength while the country faces economic and military pressure. War With the United States and Israel The demonstration comes months after the United States and Israel launched military operations against Iran in February. The conflict has affected Iran’s economy, regional security and energy markets. The U.S.-Iran conflict has also placed increased pressure on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy corridors. Reuters reported Friday that the waterway remained severely disrupted and that the United States and Iran had not held peace talks since June. The Associated Press reported that Iran claimed it had attacked a Togo-flagged oil tanker, the Trend, after accusing the vessel of attempting an illegal passage through the Strait of Hormuz. Britain’s United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center reported that a tanker was struck by a projectile and caught fire, although the fire was extinguished. Overall shipping traffic through the waterway has fallen sharply since the beginning of the conflict, increasing concerns about global energy supplies. Anti-Government Forces Remain Active The government’s mobilization also comes after months of internal unrest. Iran experienced widespread anti-government protests beginning late last year, with demonstrations driven initially by economic grievances before expanding into broader opposition to the country’s political system. The United Nations recently reported that Iranian authorities carried out unlawful killings, torture and arbitrary detention during the crackdown. Iranian officials have disputed international accounts of the unrest and have attributed the protests to foreign-backed groups. More recently, opposition to government policies has continued in less organized forms. AP reported this week that Iranian women have continued publicly defying mandatory headscarf rules, despite arrests and other enforcement measures. The issue remains particularly sensitive because authorities have been balancing enforcement with concerns that a renewed crackdown could produce additional unrest during wartime and economic hardship. In September, the United Nations fact-finding mission also reported that Iran’s crackdown involved widespread abuses. The findings remain contested by Tehran and are part of an international investigation rather than a judicial determination. Economic Pressure and the Strait of Hormuz Iran’s internal mobilization is taking place as the country’s economy faces the effects of sanctions, military disruption and restrictions on maritime commerce. The Strait of Hormuz is particularly important because it provides a major route for oil and natural gas shipments leaving the Persian Gulf. Recent attacks and threats have reduced traffic and contributed to higher energy prices. The disruption extends beyond Iran. Reuters reported that oil markets were responding to attacks involving Iran and Iran-aligned Houthi forces in the region, while Saudi Arabia has faced disruptions to important energy infrastructure. The conflict has therefore created consequences far beyond the battlefield, affecting international shipping, energy markets and regional security. Earlier Protests and Government Crackdown Iran’s latest military-volunteer campaign follows some of the country’s largest protests in decades. The Associated Press reported that Iranian officials previously claimed millions had volunteered to defend the country. The AP said those figures could not be independently confirmed. Reports of deaths and arrests during the earlier protests have varied considerably, with Iranian officials and international organizations providing different figures. The new volunteer force could potentially strengthen the government’s ability to respond to future unrest, although its eventual role remains uncertain. The current rally thus serves two purposes for Tehran: demonstrating support for the government during wartime and organizing additional personnel for national defense.
