Cisco 4,000 Layoffs Announced Even as Company Posts Record Revenue and Double-Digit Growth

Cisco 4,000 layoffs

In corporate America's increasingly surreal theater of simultaneous triumph and downsizing, Cisco has claimed center stage. The networking technology giant announced Wednesday it is eliminating nearly 4,000 jobs — approximately 5% of its entire global workforce — despite having just delivered better-than-expected profit and revenue figures for its fiscal third quarter.

The justification: restructuring its "cost structure" to pour resources into artificial intelligence and cybersecurity. The contradiction: record revenue. The silence: when asked whether CEO Chuck Robbins — slated to earn more than $52 million in executive compensation in 2025 — plans to reduce his own pay package, a company spokesperson declined to comment.

The Paradox of Profitable Purges

Cisco's move is not an isolated tremor but part of a widening earthquake shaking the technology sector. Within days of Cisco's announcement, Cloudflare declared that AI had rendered 1,100 positions obsolete — even as the company reported record-high revenue. General Motors simultaneously laid off hundreds of IT workers, explicitly stating it intended to replace them with employees carrying stronger AI credentials.

The pattern has crystallized into something approaching an industry doctrine: strong financial results are no longer a shield against job cuts. Profit and payroll reductions now travel together, hand in hand, rewriting the social contract between tech employers and their workers.

Cisco has walked this road before — and recently. The company executed two separate rounds of layoffs in 2024, cutting thousands of employees, and trimmed more than 150 additional jobs in 2025. Thursday's announcement is the latest chapter in what has become a multi-year restructuring saga at one of Silicon Valley's most storied institutions.

Robbins Touts Records, Announces Cuts in the Same Breath

In a blog post published Wednesday, Cisco CEO Chuck Robbins performed the delicate rhetorical balancing act that has become a hallmark of the AI-era layoff announcement. He celebrated the company's "record revenue" and "double-digit growth" in the same breath that he outlined plans to shrink the workforce — framing the cuts not as a consequence of struggle, but as a deliberate strategic investment in "our employees' use of AI across the company."

The company said it is redirecting resources toward cybersecurity — a pivot that carries particular urgency given recent events. Cisco has spent the past several years fighting fires it did not entirely start but has struggled to contain.

A Security Giant With a Security Problem

The irony of Cisco — whose routers, switches, and firewalls form the backbone of corporate and government networks worldwide — announcing a major cybersecurity investment push is not lost on those who have tracked the company's recent vulnerability disclosures.

Since 2023, hackers have been exploiting critical bugs in Cisco's products to breach the networks of major corporate customers. Chinese state-linked hackers were found weaponizing a previously unknown zero-day vulnerability against Cisco customers as recently as late 2025. The US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency issued warnings to federal agencies to urgently patch compromised Cisco firewalls amid active, ongoing exploitation across US government systems.

The breaches did not stop there. In August 2025, a hacker used a voice phishing attack — a technique as audacious as it is low-tech — to steal personal information belonging to Cisco customers, triggering a data breach that further dented the company's security credibility.

For a company whose core value proposition is keeping networks safe, each vulnerability disclosure is not merely a technical problem. It is a reputational wound.

The AI Acceleration and Its Human Cost

Cisco's strategic logic, stripped to its core, follows a formula now familiar across Silicon Valley: humans doing tasks that AI can perform — or will soon perform — are a cost to be reduced; AI infrastructure and the people who build it are an investment to be made.

The 4,000 employees whose positions are being eliminated are, in the cold arithmetic of that formula, on the wrong side of the ledger.

What remains unanswered — and conspicuously unaddressed by the company's spokesperson — is whether the executive suite will share in any of the sacrifice. Robbins's compensation package, valued at over $52 million for 2025 alone, dwarfs the combined annual salaries of the workers being shown the door. Cisco did not respond when asked whether any portion of that figure would be adjusted in light of the restructuring.

What Comes Next

Cisco did not specify a timeline for completing the workforce reduction or detail which divisions or geographies would bear the heaviest burden. The company's pivot toward AI and cybersecurity signals a fundamental reshaping of its identity — from a hardware-dominant networking provider to a software and services company built for an AI-saturated enterprise landscape.

Whether that transformation justifies the human cost being extracted to fund it is a question Cisco's leadership has, so far, chosen not to answer directly. For nearly 4,000 employees, the answer is already being written — in severance packages, not stock charts.
