A day at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium turned into a scene of urgency and uncertainty Saturday after officials received alarming reports of a bomb threat and an active shooter, forcing a full-scale evacuation and immediate closure.

Authorities said the call came in at approximately 2:18 p.m. on May 2, setting off a chain reaction that unfolded with the precision—and tension—of a fire alarm in a crowded theater.

Law Enforcement Mobilizes Within Minutes

According to the Delaware County Sheriff's Office, multiple law enforcement agencies rushed to the zoo, located northwest of Columbus, beginning evacuation procedures around 2:20 p.m. Within 10 minutes, deputies were on site, coordinating efforts to clear visitors and staff.

Officials later said the incident is being investigated as a “swatting” call—a false report designed to provoke a large emergency response. Still, authorities emphasized that every such threat must be treated as real, no matter how deceptive it may seem.

Pattern of Threats Raises Concern

The disruption did not occur in isolation. Similar threats were reported at other zoos across the country, including one in Toledo, within the same 24-hour window. The pattern has raised concerns about coordinated hoaxes targeting public spaces.

Like dominoes falling across state lines, these incidents suggest a broader attempt to trigger panic and stretch emergency resources thin.

Guests, Staff, and Animals Safe

Despite the chaos, zoo officials confirmed that all guests, employees, and animals were unharmed. The evacuation extended to nearby facilities, including the Safari Golf Club, which also shut down operations for the remainder of the day.

“We appreciate the cooperation of all guests who were visiting at the time, as well as the coordinated response of our staff, which allowed for an orderly evacuation,” the zoo said in a statement.
