Human rights groups have since reported that hundreds of people were killed by the Basij in 2019.

Mass Uprising in Iran against the Islamic government

Iran has a population of 86 million people.  All acts of rebellion are taken seriously by the authoritarian government. The conservative Islamic theocracy has rigid laws. And they do not allow any dissent.

The police are cracking down on the protestors. And it is alleged that the Basij are arresting and killing demonstrators in the violent response.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps issued a statement. They describe the unrest as a “conspiracy” of protesters who have been organized and armed by the “enemy.” They are referring to the US and Israel as “the enemy.”

The mass protests are also taking place during a devastating economic downturn. And the inflation in Iran has soared to over 50%.
