Farhad Azima Dechert Case Takes Another Twist in Court Saga

Fahad Azima Dechert Case

In the latest turn of events, the courtroom echoed Judge Michael Green's pronouncement: Farhad Azima's efforts to overturn a judgment of fraud against him would have to wait. The aviation magnate's claims could possibly interfere with Dechert LLP's defense against explosive allegations of a hacking conspiracy led by a former partner.

Tangled Web of Claims and Counterclaims

Deep in the heart of this legal maze lies the Ras Al Khaimah Investment Authority (RAKIA) of the UAE, a sovereign fund entangled with Azima. Judge Green shed light on the matter, declaring that Azima's fraud findings are closely knit with the claims against Dechert and its former white-collar crime lead, Neil Gerrard. The two narratives are intertwined like serpents in an epic battle, each trying to strike the other down.

Azima, not one to retreat, had earlier secured a chance to challenge a High Court ruling which found him guilty of defrauding RAKIA. The saga thickened when the Court of Appeal hinted at a possibility of deceit on RAKIA's end and its witnesses.

In a perplexing move, RAKIA withdrew from the fray, allowing Azima to seek a default judgment. His strategy? Asserting that neither Dechert nor Gerrard had a stake in the initial fraud allegations.

However, the counterplay from the law firm and Gerrard claims that their right to defend themselves hinges on the fundamental principle that wrongdoing cannot hide behind the veil of privacy.

The Ghosts of Past Verdicts

This battle has its roots deeply entrenched in Dechert and Gerrard's past engagements for the ex-leader of Ras Al Khaimah, one of the glittering stars in the UAE's constellation.

In 2019, the High Court's gavel had declared Azima guilty of defrauding RAKIA over multiple ventures, one being a flight simulation school. The price of this judgment? A staggering $4 million in damages. While this decision echoed again in 2021, the tides shifted when a second panel from the Court of Appeal presented newfound evidence in 2023, suggesting Gerrard's potential role in manipulating the 2019 trial.

Fueling the fire, Azima's counsel accused Gerrard of masterminding a "perjury school" in Switzerland, ostensibly to guide a private investor on presenting falsified evidence.

The narrative intensifies with Azima's claims of being at the center of a hacking storm, orchestrated by Gerrard with the backing of Sheikh Saud bin-Saqr Al-Qasimi, the ruler of Ras Al Khaimah.

Both Gerrard and Dechert have refuted these allegations, maintaining their silence and awaiting the 2024 trial showdown.
