February Unemployment Up as Job Losses Surprise Economists

February Unemployment Up

February Unemployment Up as the latest labor market data revealed weaker-than-expected job growth and a slight increase in the national unemployment rate. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), non-farm payrolls fell by 92,000 jobs in February 2026, sharply missing analyst forecasts that predicted roughly 59,000 jobs would be added.

The report also showed the unemployment rate rising to 4.4%, up from 4.3% in January, reinforcing concerns that the U.S. labor market may be starting to soften after a period of steady growth. The data immediately caught the attention of economists, policymakers, and financial markets.

February Unemployment Up Markets React

The report indicated that February Unemployment is up even as some sectors continued to add workers. Employment increased in social assistance, one of the few areas showing steady hiring during the month.

However, several major sectors experienced declines, including:

  • Healthcare
  • Information technology
  • Federal government employment

These job losses contributed to the overall drop in payrolls and helped push the unemployment rate higher.

February Unemployment Up Sparks Volatility in Crypto Markets

Financial markets reacted quickly after the employment data was released. The cryptocurrency market showed immediate volatility following the announcement that February Unemployment Up and job growth had fallen short of expectations.

  • Bitcoin dropped to $69,800 at 13:30 UTC before rebounding to $70,300 minutes later.
  • By 14:50 UTC, Bitcoin had fallen further to $68,300.

Ether followed a similar pattern:

  • Falling to $2,039 at 13:30 UTC
  • Rebounding to $2,061
  • Sliding again to $1,977 by 14:50 UTC

Cryptocurrencies often respond quickly to macroeconomic data because labor reports can influence expectations about interest rate policy and liquidity.

ADP Employment Report

While the federal report showed declining payrolls, data released earlier in the week presented a somewhat different outlook.

The ADP National Employment Report indicated that private sector employers added 63,000 jobs in February, exceeding expectations of 50,000 new positions.

Much of the growth came from small businesses with 1–19 employees, which added 58,000 jobs during the month.

Previous employment trends showed strong gains in:

  • Education and health services (+58,000)
  • Construction (+19,000)
  • Information sector (+11,000)

Meanwhile, job losses occurred in professional and business services (-30,000) and manufacturing (-5,000).

Inflation and Consumer Confidence Rising

Data suggests inflation pressures remain a concern for policymakers.

According to the BLS:

  • Producer prices rose 2.9% year-over-year through January 2026
  • Core PPI increased 3.6%, excluding food and energy

The Federal Reserve closely watches the Core Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) Price Index, which rose 3.0% during the 12 months through December 2025.

Meanwhile, consumer sentiment improved slightly. The Consumer Confidence Index rose 2.2 points to 91.2 in February, up from 89.0 in January.

Dana M. Peterson, Chief Economist at The Conference Board, explained:

“Confidence ticked up in February after falling in January, as consumers’ pessimistic expectations for the future eased somewhat.”

However, she noted that confidence levels remain well below the four-year peak of 112.8 recorded in November 2024.

Federal Reserve Officials See February Unemployment Up

Labor market data like the February report plays a critical role in Federal Reserve policy decisions at the BLS.

Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller emphasized the importance of the employment figures, saying:

“If the good labor market news of January is revised away or evaporates in February, it would support my position… that a 25-basis-point reduction in the policy rate was appropriate.”

Meanwhile, Chicago Federal Reserve President Austan Goolsbee warned that inflation remaining near 3% could still pose risks to the economy.

“Stalling out at 3% is not a safe place to be for a myriad of reasons we know all too well,” Goolsbee said.

With February Unemployment Up, economists and investors are closely monitoring upcoming economic reports for clues about the direction of interest rates, inflation, and economic growth in 2026.
