Nearly 300,000 masks were made available to visitors by the Department of the Interior and social distancing and handwashing was encouraged. Many attendees decided not to wear face coverings and the President spoke to a largely mask-less crowd.
Despite much of the rest of the U.S. seeing growing restrictions put in place, the “Salute to America” event boasted a fireworks display of more than 10,000 fireworks, military flyovers, and public access to the National Mall for viewing.
