Furthermore, he reminded Trump that “the job of president of the United States is to defend the Constitution and protect the impartial administration of justice.”
On the other hand, Flake said Trump’s behavior in attacking Sessions was wrong. He believed the president was trying to use the DOJ to “settle political scores.”
In a tweet, Flake wrote, “This is not the conduct of a president committed to defending and upholding the Constitution, but rather a president looking to use the Department of Justice to settle political scores.”
Sasse and Flake Among Trump’s Vocal Critics
Both Republican senators have been outspoken critics of the president on different issues. In July, Sasse said Trump’s Helsinki summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin was a failure.
