Brown called the proposal a “betrayal and an assault on the health of Americans everywhere.” It’s a “reckless scheme” because “motorists will pay more at the pump, get worse mileage and breathe dirtier air.”

California Attorney General Xavier Becerra added that the Trump administration’s attack on the country’s Clean Car standards is “unlawful.”

Additionally, Becerra said the California Department of Justice will “use every legal tool at its disposal to defend” the fuel economy and GHG standards.

Currently, California is leading a coalition of states challenging the EPA to preserve the country’s single emission standard. The coalition is representing 43 percent of the U.S. auto industry and 140 million people.
