While Schumer and House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries voiced their support for the agreement, conservative House Republicans, particularly the House Freedom Caucus, expressed dissatisfaction, deeming it a “total failure.”

Lawmakers needed this agreement on spending levels to proceed with drafting bills that delineate line-by-line funding for agencies. The looming lapses in funding on January 19 and February 2 necessitated a swift resolution.

It’s important to note that this agreement is separate from negotiations for additional funding for Israel and Ukraine and the easing of restrictions on asylum claims at the U.S. border.
