Gulf Coast in the Crosshairs: Level 3 Weather Alert

On Monday, a Level 3 of 5 enhanced risk looms over cities like New Orleans, Louisiana, Gulfport, Mississippi, and Mobile, Alabama.

Tornadoes are expected, and a Level 3 of 4 moderate risk of excessive rainfall could lead to significant flooding, with 3 to 5 inches anticipated.

Tuesday brings the same system to the east, posing an enhanced risk for severe weather in cities like Tallahassee, Florida, Albany, Georgia, and Panama City, Florida.

Winter Storm Intensifies: From Southwest to Northeast

Following the recent winter storm, another powerful system is set to carve its path from the Southwest to the Northeast.

Rapidly strengthening into a formidable January storm, it is predicted to cover over 1,800 miles in 72 hours, unleashing heavy snow, blizzard conditions, strong winds, tornadoes, and flooding.

Blizzard Conditions and Driving Hazards

The storm, now an expansive system, will bring blizzard conditions, poor visibility, and treacherous driving from Arizona to the Texas and Oklahoma panhandle regions.

Colorado and New Mexico have already raised blizzard warnings. As the system progresses, the Midwest will experience challenging conditions on Tuesday, with strong winds creating sub-zero wind chill values in some Plains locations.

Eastward Surge: Flooding, Damaging Winds, and Tornadoes

As the storm surges northeast, it intensifies, expanding its reach across the eastern half of the U.S. Flooding, damaging winds, and tornadoes become prime concerns.

Along the Gulf Coast, warm, moist air contributes to the threat of severe storms, including strong tornadoes and damaging winds.

Severe Storm Threat and Flooding Concerns

More than 15 million people face a severe storm threat from Texas to Florida on Monday.

An estimated 35 million under the same threat on Tuesday from the Florida Panhandle to the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

Widespread river and flash flooding are anticipated from the central Gulf Coast through much of the Eastern U.S. Rainfall totals of 1 to 3 inches, with isolated locations exceeding 4 inches, are expected from the Gulf Coast to New England.

Flood Risk and Snowmelt in the Northeast

The Northeast, still recovering from the previous snowstorm, faces a Level 3 out of 4 risks for flooding in parts of New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania on Tuesday.

Heavy rain exacerbates snowmelt, raising flood potential. Wind adds to concerns, making trees susceptible to toppling, potentially causing power outages.

High Winds South and East

Louisiana and Mississippi, dealing with droughts, face potential flooding due to the saturated ground. Winds exceeding 50 MPH may cause damage from the Appalachians to the East Coast.

The National Weather Service warns of power outages, especially along the coast, with high wind watches and potential hurricane-force winds.

Coastal Impact: High Surf, Erosion, and Rip Currents

Closer to the coast, high wind watches and hurricane-force wind warnings are imminent. High surf of 8 to 11 feet, beach erosion, and dangerous rip currents are anticipated, persisting through the middle of the week.

The storm system is expected to conclude by week's end, but another storm threatens a similar trajectory later in the week and into the weekend.
