The long-anticipated moment captured in grand canyon park reopen north rim is finally here—marking a dramatic return to life after flames once carved through one of America’s most breathtaking landscapes.

Like a phoenix rising from scorched earth, the North Rim of the Grand Canyon is preparing to welcome visitors again, though not without reminders of the fire’s lasting imprint.

Reopening Date Set for Mid-May

Park officials confirmed that the Grand Canyon’s North Rim will officially reopen at 6 a.m. on Friday, May 15, following months of closure caused by the Dragon Bravo Fire that tore through the region last July.

With the reopening comes restored access to the entire North Kaibab Trail, a crucial route for hikers and one of the park’s most iconic pathways.

Fire’s Aftermath Still Lingers

145,000 Acres Burned

The Dragon Bravo Fire began with a lightning strike, but strong winds quickly transformed it into a destructive force. Within about a week, it had severely damaged infrastructure and burned approximately 145,000 acres.

Now, as the area reopens, major roadways—including Highway 67, Cape Royal Road, and Point Imperial Road—will once again allow visitors to reach scenic overlooks and trailheads along the North Rim.

Hikers Get Green Light—With Caution

Rim-to-Rim Treks Return

The reopening signals hopeful news for outdoor enthusiasts: Rim-to-Rim hikes are expected to be possible again in 2026, reversing earlier uncertainty.

The full stretch of the North Kaibab Trail—previously closed north of Ribbon Falls—will reopen to foot traffic. However, officials caution that temporary closures or delays may still occur as crews continue restoring fire-damaged areas.

“Post-fire hazards and weather events may also result in additional closures,” park officials warned.

Risks Remain in Burned Terrain

Even as access returns, dangers linger beneath the surface.

Unstable ground, weakened by fire, and an increased risk of flash flooding pose ongoing threats. The North Kaibab Trail, already known for its steep switchbacks and dense coniferous forests, now demands even greater vigilance from hikers.

Despite its challenges, the trail remains a vital link—serving as a primary starting point for Rim-to-Rim journeys and connecting to multiple backcountry routes.

Limited Parking, Expanded Access Options

Visitors Urged to Plan Ahead

Access to the North Kaibab Trailhead will be restricted, with limited parking available only for vehicles under 22 feet in length.

Overflow parking will be located near the former Grand Canyon Lodge, while park officials recommend the Trans-Canyon Shuttle for hikers attempting point-to-point treks.

Campgrounds and Backcountry Access Reopen

In tandem with trail access, key services are also returning.

Cottonwood Campground will reopen on May 15, along with most backcountry areas along the North Rim, improving options for overnight adventurers.

However, visitors should note that overnight lodging within the North Rim itself will not be available this season. Travelers will need to rely on accommodations outside the park for camping, food, water, and shelter.

A Landscape Reborn, Yet Still Healing

The grand canyon park reopen north rim milestone represents both recovery and resilience—a reopening shaped by nature’s fury and human determination.

Like a scar that tells a story, the land bears the marks of fire, even as it invites visitors back.

For those who return, the experience will be more than a journey—it will be a glimpse into renewal, where beauty and fragility walk hand in hand.
