Every year on February 2, Americans celebrate Groundhog Day, a quirky tradition where groundhogs supposedly predict the weather based on whether they see their shadow.

The most famous of these furry forecasters is Punxsutawney Phil, who has been at the center of this event for over a century.

Groundhog Day 2025 Prediction

During this year’s Groundhog Day celebration in Pennsylvania, Punxsutawney Phil emerged from his burrow at Gobbler’s Knob and saw his shadow, signaling six more weeks of winter. According to tradition, this means winter will persist until March 16.

Thousands of spectators gathered to witness the event, which has been a staple in Punxsutawney since it was first mentioned in local newspapers in 1886.

According to folklore, Punxsutawney Phil is no ordinary groundhog—he is said to be immortal, thanks to a mystical “elixir of life” that he drinks every summer.

This elixir magically gives him the ability to predict the weather year-after-year, making him the longest-running weather-predicting groundhog in history.
