The school day had barely begun when violence shattered the morning calm. According to school officials, the campus was placed on lockdown at 8:34 a.m., just minutes before classes were scheduled to start at 8:55 a.m.

Jesse Lopez, a parent, told KSAT-TV that explaining the situation to his daughter—who has autism—would be especially difficult.

“She’ll be afraid to go back,” he said. “Real afraid.”
