In a chilling episode that has rattled an entire neighborhood, the Indianapolis City Councilor's home shooting is being investigated as a targeted act tied to a heated local dispute over a proposed data center.

Gunfire Shatters the Night

Ron Gibson, a third-term councilor in Indianapolis, said his home was struck by a barrage of bullets shortly after midnight. According to his account, 13 shots were fired directly at his front door—an attack as abrupt and violent as a thunderclap in the dead of night.

Left behind on his doorstep was a chilling message: a zip-sealed bag containing a note reading, “NO DATA CENTERS.”

Inside the home, Gibson and his 8-year-old son were jolted awake by the gunfire.

“My son and I were not physically harmed, but we were awakened by the sound of gunfire,” Gibson said in a statement. “Like any parent, I ran to him immediately and reassured him that he was safe.”

But the emotional aftershock lingered.

“This was not just an attack on my home,” he added, “it endangered my child and shook the sense of safety across our neighborhood. Public service invites disagreement—but violence should never cross that line.”

Investigation Intensifies

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department reported that officers responded to the residence around 9 a.m. Monday, discovering clear evidence of gunfire. Authorities believe the Indianapolis City Councilor's home shooting was a deliberate and isolated act.

No suspect has yet been identified.

Federal authorities have joined the case, with the Federal Bureau of Investigation assisting in the ongoing investigation.

A Controversial Project at the Center

At the heart of the tension lies a proposed data center in the Martindale-Brightwood neighborhood—a project that has sparked both hope and outrage.

Facilities designed to power artificial intelligence systems have increasingly stirred debate across the U.S., often criticized for consuming vast amounts of electricity and water. Critics warn of rising utility costs and environmental strain, while supporters argue they bring jobs and economic growth.

Just days before the shooting, Gibson spoke in favor of rezoning land at 2505 North Sherman Drive during a Metropolitan Development Commission meeting. The proposal, led by Metrobloks LLC, includes plans for a data center and additional office spaces.

“There are real benefits tied to this development,” Gibson said at the meeting, noting that construction alone could generate around 300 jobs over three years.

Yet the reaction was immediate and visceral. As Gibson addressed the room, boos echoed through the chamber. When attendees were asked to stand if they opposed the project, a majority rose to their feet—a visual wave of dissent.

Despite the backlash, the commission approved the rezoning request last week, though it still awaits a final decision from the City-County Council.

Community Leaders Condemn Violence

In the wake of the shooting, community group Protect Martindale-Brightwood—an outspoken critic of the data center—moved quickly to distance itself from the incident.

“Violence has no place in our community or our advocacy,” the group said in a social media statement. “Any messaging found at the scene is not affiliated with us and does not reflect our values. Our work is rooted in peaceful, community-led efforts.”

Meanwhile, Maggie Lewis, president of the City-County Council, called for calm and civility.

“Differences in opinion are essential in civic life,” Lewis said. “But threats and violence are not dialogue—they undermine democracy and community safety.”
