Democrats, since the inception of For the People Act, have remained well aware of concerns that Republicans have. However, rather than attempting to reach middle ground with the GOP, Democrats proceeded, aiming to pass their elections bill with only leftist votes.
As Tuesday demonstrated, this plan did not work out so well. For the People Act is essentially defeated and crushed.
Partisan reactions to the outcome
Republicans and Democrats each had their own responses to the outcome of the vote on For the People Act. The GOP blasted the legislation and furthermore criticized Democrats for favoring a bill that would corrupt U.S. elections.
Democrats, meanwhile, accused the GOP and conservatives of attempting to block Americans from voting rights. The political left continues to argue that opponents of For the People Act harbor racist and fascist interests.
Despite these attacks, Republicans still remain very vocal about the parts of For the People Act that are most troublesome to them.
