Lyft, DHS Join Forces to Combat Human Trafficking

DHS has likewise gone on record, stating the Super Bowl and other similar events tend to correlate with upticks in human trafficking cases.

This week, DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas lauded his agency’s partnership with Lyft. Stressing the importance of “whole-of-society [efforts]” against human trafficking, Mayorkas said the collaboration will ultimately save lives and help people who may have otherwise fallen through the cracks.

Anti-human trafficking efforts in the transportation industry

Over the years, there’ve been increasing efforts to educate people who are most likely to come across trafficking victims, due to the industries they work in.

Truckers Against Trafficking is a prime example of this. In other instances, various states have passed laws mandating anti-human trafficking training for employees who work in airports, casinos, restaurants, and hotels.

In the face of a crime fueled by secrecy, fear, and shame, knowledge and appropriate action stand among the most powerful weapons required to defeat human trafficking.
