No traveler looks forward to flight cancellations when they have places to be and things to do. Unfortunately, delays and shutdowns of flights can happen for a series of reasons, such as the weather, air traffic control complications, and more.

Across the pond in the United Kingdom, considerable flight delays happened as a result of complications with the National Air Traffic Services' computer systems.

Here in America, flight cancellations are already racking up, albeit for a very different reason. This time, the issues with travel have to do with the approach of Hurricane Idalia that's on its way to Florida.

Everything to know about travel delays

So far, the trajectory of Hurricane Idalia indicates its likely arrival in Florida by Wednesday, August 30. Already, various communities in the Sunshine State remain advised to heed evacuation orders and take the necessary steps to protect themselves.

As a precautionary measure, the Tampa International Airport (TPA) shut down on Tuesday, indicating on Instagram that it would only open "when it is safe to do so."

This means all flights set to leave the airport today have been cancelled. In the coming days, more cancellations and/or delays of flights inbound, outbound, or with connections via TPA may also occur.

Multiple airlines have hence started helping travelers adjust their plans, given the complications that Hurricane Idalia continues to pose for air transit.

Preparing for Hurricane Idalia

Florida's already had an emergency declaration approved, due to the impacts that Idalia is expected to have on the state. This approval enables Florida to best prepare itself and employ the necessary safeguards.

So far, various communities remain advised to prepare for power outages, heavy rains, and otherwise turbulent weather.

Aside from evacuations, Floridians should also take the following precautionary measures:

• Stocking up supply kits
• Securing boats
• Placing critical documents in waterproof containers
• Bringing in outdoor furniture, signs, yard decorations, etc.

In the Sunshine State, Gov. Ron DeSantis continues to give ongoing updates about Hurricane Idalia so Floridians remain aware of what's happening. Likewise, the Florida governor is working with various officials to ensure preparedness for both the hurricane's arrival and the days and weeks after.
