The potential for a formal impeachment investigation into President Biden has been floated by Speaker Kevin McCarthy, marking the most direct indication of such action from the California Republican yet.

"The journey down the evidence trail seems to be inching us closer to an impeachment inquiry," McCarthy declared to Sean Hannity of Fox News on Monday. He implied that this legislative device would empower Congress to extract all necessary details and intelligence.

The context of McCarthy's statement is a string of Congressional probes, spearheaded by House Republicans, aimed squarely at President Biden, his administration, and even his family, notably his son, Hunter Biden.

Accusations of political meddling in Hunter Biden's tax investigation, purportedly coming from two IRS whistleblowers, have become a contentious topic.

Despite the rebuffs by US Attorney David Weiss and Attorney General Merrick Garland, House Republicans continue to demand responses. Hunter Biden has consented to plead guilty to two federal tax misdemeanors as part of a plea arrangement.

White House Rebuts McCarthy's Claims

Reacting to the developments, the White House castigated the Republican House members for their apparent determination to challenge the president, regardless of the facts.

White House spokesperson Ian Sams criticized the GOP on Monday night, accusing them of prioritizing their attacks on the president over addressing vital American issues such as inflation and job creation.

GOP's Rising Calls for Impeachment

Increasing demands from hardline conservatives in his conference for an inquiry into President Biden and his administration have put Speaker McCarthy under escalating pressure. In addition to Biden, Garland and Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas have also been targeted for possible impeachment investigations by House Republicans.

Despite these growing calls for action, McCarthy has previously refrained from endorsing an impeachment against Biden, wary of jeopardizing the GOP's slim House majority, given the unlikelihood of success in the Democratic-led Senate.

However, with mounting evidence, Rep. Ralph Norman of South Carolina expressed his support for impeachment, insisting that it was time for the Speaker to step in.

Will There Be Accountability?

Highlighting the gravity of the situation, Norman underscored the need for accountability, even at the highest office, questioning the timing of such measures, if not now.

Interestingly, despite McCarthy's previous discouragement, the House paused a resolution by GOP Rep. Lauren Boebert of Colorado in June, putting off a forced vote on Biden's impeachment. The notion of clearing former President Trump's dual impeachments has also been backed by McCarthy, adding further perplexity to the situation.

Political Interference Allegations Met With Denials

CNN reports that Weiss is open to giving a public testimony at a congressional hearing this fall, with several proposed dates in September and October.

The staunch denials from Weiss, Garland, and other top Justice Department officials regarding any political interference in the Hunter Biden investigation still stand. Weiss maintains that he had been granted absolute control over the issue, including the authority to decide whether charges should be filed.
