Protests are not going away. As millions of Americans lose their jobs, livelihoods, and businesses due to compulsory shutdowns, people are deciding that enough is enough.

During this week alone, protests have taken place in Ohio, North Carolina and now in Michigan. This morning, brave Michiganders gathered with one another and took to the streets. While exercising their lawful and constitutional right to peaceably assemble, Michigan residents demanded an end to Democrat Governor Gretchen Whitmer's Stay Home, Stay Safe order.

What to Know About Today's Protests in Michigan

Michigan residents gathered at the State Capitol to hold their protest known as Operation Gridlock. Protests took place both in and outside of people's cars. Michiganders did not mice words, noting the imperative nature of rights, freedoms, and liberties.

While protesting, residents of the state also pointed out Governor Whitmer's lack of measures to preserve economic health and physical health. Others noted the flaws of adopting a one-size-fits-all approach to local issues.

In one protester's own words:

"When did one size solve everyone’s local issues? Gov. Whitmer will put you out of business before allowing mere citizens to be responsible for their own behavior. That is madness." 

Whitmer's executive order is, by far, one of the strictest in the nation. Under her mandate, Michiganders are legally prohibited from visiting friends' and families' houses, attending religious services, purchasing "non-essential" items in open stores, etc.

Residents of Michigan are so fed up with Whitmer that they started a petition to remove her from office. The petition has garnered more than 250,000 signatures; you can sign here.

The Constitutional Right to Protest

Regardless of any governor's orders, the right to peaceable assemble remains a constitutional right. The reality here is that Governor Whitmer's mandate goes way too far. Forcing Americans out of work, shuttering businesses, and calling the jobs that pay workers' bill "non-essential" does not engender public health.

Americans, both in and out of Michigan, must get back to work. Protests will continue to happen until governors get the message and lift these draconian restrictions. Coronavirus has a recovery rate that surpasses 90% and 80% of all COVID-19 cases are moderate or mild; the same cannot be said for the millions of people, businesses, and jobs that are going under.

Elected officials and others cannot claim to care about human lives and health while dooming millions of Americans' lives to destruction.
