Within the past several weeks, a growing number of Americans have stated that neither President Biden nor former President Trump is fit to lead this nation. People with this view are taking to social media, weighing in with their concerns.

In spite of this, Biden and Trump are who Republicans and Democrats backed during the primaries. Both contenders faced in-party challengers; yet none of the Republicans who opposed Trump, nor the Democrats who opposed Biden, came close to getting enough votes to secure the nomination(s).

This happened notwithstanding polls at the time that showed as many as 70% of Americans didn't want this year's presidential election to be a rematch of 2020's.

On Thursday, a new survey came out, with this one reflecting America's collective discontent with the GOP's and Democratic Party's de facto nominees.

New insights from Pew Research Center

According to Pew Research Center polling, 63% of voters deem both Trump and Biden as embarrassments. 33% of individuals who are backing the former president hold this view of him, as do 37% of Biden's supporters.

However, voters are less likely to view Biden as mentally competent than Trump. When asked, 24% expressed faith in the current president's mental astuteness, whereas 48% of the electorate said the same about Trump.

Ultimately voters believe Biden is more honest and empathic than his GOP rival. Trump, meanwhile, carries a more "mean-spirited" disposition than the incumbent president, per a majority of voters.

Primary elections matter as much as the general races

Americans who participate in primary elections will ultimately determine which nominees proceed to the general elections. Unfortunately, primaries tend to garner far fewer voters than the more high-profile general races.

Complaining about the (de facto) nominees of a party while not participating in primary elections that select said nominees accomplishes nothing. Just as Democrats who aren't sold on Biden had the chance to vote for one of his challengers, the same goes for Republicans who don't like Trump.

Barring a major plot twist, event, or change at the 11th hour, the next president will be either Biden or Trump. Come 2028, both parties will have another opportunity to pick new nominees.
