For quite some time, many girls who don't live in Western countries have struggled with access to education. Sometimes, barriers against their access can include a lack of transportation, familial expectations, cultural issues, and more. No matter the underlying reason, when girls aren't able to attend school, it places them at a disadvantage. A lack of education gives girls fewer options in life, especially when boys their age are going to school, learning, and preparing themselves for the world around them. Currently, in Africa, reports confirm that girls across the continent are having to stop going to school, due to economic hardships.

The biggest barrier against educating girls in Africa

Over the past year and a half, the increase of energy and food expenses - coupled with COVID - has been putting a strain on female school attendance. Therefore, African charity Camfed seeks to raise money to counteract these problems and get girls back into classrooms. Without educational opportunities, many girls in the continent resort to premature marriages or work with very low pay. Currently, Camfed aims to garner a total of $414m to get at least six million African girls to school. The charity's previous work led to successful outcomes, with girls not only successfully finishing school, but also maintaining higher rates of self-esteem. With this came a longer period of time before these girls married or had children.

Financial problems around the world

In many continents and countries, rising living expenses continue to rear their ugly heads. While higher costs don't preclude girls in certain nations from attending schools, they do put a strain on families and individuals working to make ends meet. With jobs laying off people or cutting their hours, the financial sting still remains very much in effect. The persistence of inflation also doesn't do anything to help folks who are barely able to support themselves under current economic conditions. Time will ultimately tell whether or not Camfed is successful in its efforts to get millions of African girls back in classrooms and able to finish their education. In the meantime, the world is most definitely watching.
