Gorgeous, unreal beautiful night view of the reflection of the northern lights in the water of the ocean and snow-capped mountains. Night Northern Lights is just an amazing sight.

As 2024 comes to an end skywatchers are in for a celestial treat. Two powerful geomagnetic solar storms are expected to strike Earth on New Year’s Eve, creating a dazzling display of auroras across the planet.

The vibrant Northern Lights, enhanced by these storms, promise to be a memorable spectacle for those fortunate enough to catch a glimpse.

What Causes the Auroras?

The breathtaking auroras are a result of two recent coronal mass ejections (CMEs) from the Sun. These plasma eruptions are hurtling toward Earth at incredible speeds, carrying with them the potential to excite our planet’s outer atmosphere.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) forecasts that the first wave of plasma will reach Earth on Tuesday, setting the stage for the colorful displays.

Although neither CME is expected to strike Earth directly, predicting the auroras’ intensity and timing remains challenging. According to NOAA, the light show could start as early as sunrise or as late as after nightfall.

Black Moon Enhances Viewing Conditions

One fortunate coincidence for aurora enthusiasts is the timing of a recent astronomical event. On December 30, a rare Black Moon—the second new Moon of the month—darkened the night sky. This absence of moonlight provides optimal conditions for viewing the auroras and other celestial phenomena.
