After severe flooding left significant parts of the Tri-State Area in a state of disarray, Governor Kathy Hochul provided an update on the calamitous storm and its aftermath. CBS New York's reporters Elijah Westbrook and Zinnia Maldonado were at the frontline, providing live coverage on the conditions. Westbrook painted a vivid image of Old Yorktown Road in Shrub Oak, Westchester County, which was marred by the New York flooding. Residents stepping off the Taconic Parkway would be greeted by a new waterway, about 7 to 8 inches deep.

New York Flooding : Safety Concerns Amidst Rising Waters

The paramount issue in this New York flooding scenario is safety, especially for drivers who may not fathom the depth of the water until they're in it. However, Westchester County wasn't the only one to bear the brunt of the Sunday evening storm. Areas like Rockland and Orange counties morphed into something akin to the rapids of a rushing river, with Thayer Road at West Point clocking almost 8 inches of rainfall, one of the highest totals in the Tri-State Area.

Tragedy Strikes as Flooding Intensifies

The severity of the New York flooding was tragically underscored when a woman in her mid-30s lost her life trying to evacuate her home in Highland Falls, Orange County. The County Executive, Steve Neuhaus, conveyed the poignant event, explaining how the woman and her dog were crossing what had become a river, leading to her fatal loss of footing.

Flash Floods and Emergencies

The already devastated Hudson Valley found no respite on Monday morning as rain continued its onslaught, exacerbating the New York flooding situation. Life-threatening flash flooding was sparked by hours of torrential downpour, leading to the issuance of flash flood warnings and a rare flood emergency. At the heart of the crisis was Orange County, where a 35-year-old woman tragically perished in the rushing floodwaters as she attempted to escape her flooded house with her dog.

 Infrastructure Impacted, Residents Displaced

As the aftermath of the slow-moving storm is being surveyed, the scale of the destruction caused by the New York flooding is becoming evident. With damages already in the tens of millions of dollars, the floodwaters have rendered critical roads such as State Route 9W, Palisades Interstate Parkway, and Metro-North's railroad tracks unusable. Hudson Line service between Croton-Harmon and Poughkeepsie has been suspended, with Newburgh-Beacon Ferry service also not running on Monday. As a result, riders are being advised to reroute to the Croton-Harmon station or utilize Harlem Line services at Southeast, Croton Falls, and other stations along the line.
