A tragic accident unfolded over the weekend near the Obama family's home on Martha's Vineyard, where their personal chef, Tafari Campbell, died while paddleboarding, Massachusetts State Police reported Monday.

Chef's Demise Sparks Hours-Long Search Operation

Tafari Campbell, 45, of Dumfries, Va., was seen struggling in the water before his lifeless body was recovered about 100 feet from shore in the Edgartown Great Pond. The Massachusetts Environmental Police discovered him through the use of sonar during an intensive search operation that started on Sunday night and enlisted the support of multiple law enforcement agencies.

The Obamas, who were not at home during the unfortunate Obama chef dies incident, had employed Campbell as a sous chef during their time in the White House. Campbell continued to work for them after their tenure.

Unraveling the Tragic Incident

The emergency services in Edgartown sprung into action after receiving a call on Sunday evening about "a male paddleboarder who had struggled to stay afloat, subsequently submerging and failing to resurface," state police detailed. Another individual paddleboarding with Campbell witnessed him disappear underwater.

The search, involving the state police, the U.S. Coast Guard, and numerous local fire departments, had to be temporarily paused Sunday night for the teams to regroup and plan the next steps.

Obama Chef Dies, Leaving Legacy of Warmth and Skill

Responding to the tragic news of the Obama chef dies incident, the former president and first lady expressed their heartbreak. The Obamas remembered Campbell as "a truly wonderful man," "a talented sous chef" and "an extraordinarily kind person."

The Obamas appreciated Campbell's creativity and his passion for food. They felt he had a knack for bringing people together through his culinary skills, and his warm, vibrant personality made their lives "a little brighter." They had asked Campbell to stay on when they were preparing to leave the White House. He had been part of their lives ever since.

Campbell is survived by his wife, Sherise, and twin boys, Xavier and Savin.

Martha's Vineyard - The Obama Summer Retreat

The Obama family, long-time summer visitors to Martha's Vineyard, bought a 30-acre property with a 6,900-square-foot house fronting Edgartown Great Pond in 2019. The pond is a popular spot for recreational boaters, particularly paddleboarders.

The Obama chef dies incident is reminiscent of a similar unfortunate occurrence in 2015, when Walter Scheib, a former executive chef for Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, drowned accidentally while hiking in Taos, N.M.
