Pete Hegseth and the Pentagon are pushing back against concerns that the U.S. military’s latest operation in the Strait of Hormuz signals a renewed war with Iran, insisting instead that the mission—dubbed “Project Freedom”—is limited in scope, defensive in nature, and temporary in duration.

The operation, launched to ensure safe passage for commercial vessels through the critical global shipping lane, comes amid heightened tensions despite a ceasefire agreement reached earlier this year.

Speaking at a May 5 briefing, Hegseth drew a clear distinction between Project Freedom and the broader U.S. military campaign against Iran, known as Operation Epic Fury.

“Project Freedom is defensive in nature, focused in scope and temporary in duration,” Hegseth said. “We’re not looking for a fight.”

According to Pentagon officials, U.S. forces involved in the mission will not enter Iranian airspace or territorial waters. Instead, the operation centers on escorting commercial ships and maintaining a protective military presence in international waters.

Hegseth described the effort as a “powerful red, white and blue dome,” consisting of Navy destroyers, fighter jets, helicopters, drones, and surveillance aircraft working in coordination to secure maritime routes.

Pentagon Describes Recent Military Actions in the Strait 

Despite the Pentagon’s characterization, recent military actions have intensified scrutiny. The U.S. military confirmed that it sank six small Iranian vessels after they attempted to challenge the naval blockade.

Brad Cooper, commander of United States Central Command, stated that U.S. forces acted in defense of commercial shipping lanes, responding to threats that included drones, cruise missiles, and aggressive maneuvers by Iranian boats.

However, details about casualties remain unclear. Tim Hawkins confirmed that individuals were aboard the vessels but declined to provide further information.

Pentagon Faces Ceasefire Under Pressure

The situation in the Strait of Hormuz has grown increasingly volatile since the April 7 ceasefire between the United States and Iran. According to Dan Caine, Iranian forces have:

• Fired on commercial ships nine times
• Seized two vessels
• Targeted U.S. military ships on at least ten occasions

Despite these incidents, Caine noted that the actions remain “below the threshold” of full-scale conflict.

Still, the risks are evident. A South Korean commercial vessel was recently targeted, and Iranian strikes reportedly hit an oil port in the United Arab Emirates—underscoring the broader economic and geopolitical implications.

Iranian officials, including parliamentary speaker Mohammad Ghalibaf, have condemned the U.S. presence as a violation of the ceasefire, raising fears of further escalation.

Donald Trump has taken a more assertive tone, referring to the operation as a “mini war” and warning that any interference with U.S. forces would be met with decisive action.

At the same time, both Trump and Hegseth argue that the ceasefire effectively pauses the legal timeline under the War Powers Resolution, which requires congressional approval for extended military engagements.

“Ultimately, with the ceasefire, the clock stops,” Hegseth said, suggesting that renewed hostilities would only resume at the president’s discretion.

Not everyone agrees with that interpretation. Legal scholars, including Tess Bridgeman and Oona Hathaway, argue that ongoing military actions—such as enforcing a naval blockade and engaging Iranian vessels—constitute active hostilities.

They contend that these actions should trigger congressional oversight under the War Powers Resolution, regardless of the ceasefire.

Similarly, David Janovsky warned that the current situation in the Persian Gulf reflects ongoing conflict rather than a true pause in hostilities.

The tensions extend beyond the Strait itself. Countries across the Middle East are increasingly entangled in the conflict. Iraq, for instance, has become a strategic focal point, with U.S. military advisers stationed near key locations such as Erbil.

The broader conflict—sparked by U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran earlier this year—has created a complex and fragile security environment. Regional actors are navigating a delicate balance between cooperation and confrontation. Global powers continue to assert their interests.
