Finally, President Trump directly addressed the Florida school shooting and defended some of his proposed measures to prevent future, similar occurrences:

Why do we protect our airports and our banks, our government buildings, but not our schools? It is time to make our schools a much harder target for attackers. We don’t want them in our schools. We don’t want them. When we declare our schools to be gun free zones, it just puts our students in far more danger.

Guns and Partisan Politics in America

Conservatives and progressives have remained at odds over notions of proper gun-related reforms and policies. Both groups have lashed out at one another in one form or another. Left-wingers accuse conservatives of turning a blind eye to school shootings, while conservatives maintain that liberals and other left-wingers simply want to do away with guns altogether.
