Schumer and Pelosi have also stated that President Trump has the “power to keep government open” and is simply choosing not to. The president, however, maintains that border security is paramount for this country and is urging Democrats to provide the necessary funds for his promised border wall.
At this point, both the president and Democratic leaders remain deadlocked. Neither side appears willing to relent. If both parties are unable to reach a resolution, then a government shutdown is a virtual guarantee.
Where Do the American People Stand?
As Trump and the Democrats remain at odds, so do many Americans. Conservatives and other members of the president’s base have affirmed the necessity of a border wall. However, individuals with more liberal leanings have sided with Pelosi and Schumer.
