Sailors Rescued After Whale Collision Sinks Yacht in South Pacific

sailors rescued after whale collision

One moment, four sailors were cruising through the remote South Pacific. The next, their entire voyage was fighting for its life against the ocean itself. A sperm whale cracked the hull of their yacht, triggering a day-and-night battle for survival on the high seas that would end roughly 18 hours later with a dramatic open-water rescue.

The Impact That Started It All

Crew members aboard the 52-foot Tai Tam told AFP on Thursday about their weekend encounter with a pod of sperm whales 250 nautical miles north of tiny Norfolk Island. "There was sort of a loud thud. The whole boat was pushed sideways," said Australian Jemma Cooper, who was thrown from the steering wheel by the force of the blow. Not immediately sure what had happened, she noticed a brown discoloration spreading across the water, then spotted a sperm whale nearby. "We looked out to our port side, and there were six to eight, a pod, of whales there. So then it became clear that that's what it was," she told AFP.

Waking to Chaos Below Deck

Jemma's husband, Jeremy Cooper, had been sleeping below deck when the impact jolted him awake. "It was pretty immediately evident it was very serious," he said. "All the steering gear was smashed on the starboard side, and there was a significant amount of water coming in," he told AFP — a boat suddenly transformed from vessel to sinking liability within seconds.

Sounding the Alarm

At 1 p.m. New Zealand time Saturday, roughly 30 minutes after the collision, the crew activated an emergency beacon. "We declared a full mayday," said New Zealand crew member Terry Hetherington, adding that they spent the following hours bailing out as much water as humanly possible, racing against a boat that was slowly losing the fight against the sea.

"Terrible Ending"

The Royal New Zealand Air Force dispatched a P-8A Poseidon patrol plane to the area to establish radio communications and coordinate the rescue, according to a military news release that included images from the operation.

Damage That Left No Room for Repair

French crew member Martin Jaffre described the whale collision as leaving several gashes in the hull and cracking the fiberglass structure, in addition to destroying the steering entirely. "We could no longer steer the boat, and a boat with no steering quickly becomes a problem," he told AFP — a vast understatement for a vessel now drifting helplessly in open ocean. Jaffre battled to slow the incoming water using anything within reach, including expansion foam, and even swam beneath the boat to inspect the hull damage firsthand, according to his crewmates.

A Desperate Fight to Stay Afloat

The sailors tried to remain aboard as long as possible, working to prevent the engine from clogging while bailing water by hand in a race against time they were slowly losing. Late that night, they finally abandoned the boat, transferring to a life raft in calm seas beneath a full moon — a surreal, almost peaceful backdrop for such a desperate situation.

Cutting Ties With the Sinking Vessel

In the early hours of Sunday morning, fearing the yacht might drag them down with it, the crew cut the tether connecting them to the boat. Soon afterward, the Tai Tam slipped beneath the waves for good.

Rescue Arrives After 18 Hours Adrift

A 470-foot container ship, the MV Sofrana Surville, rescued the sailors at 6 a.m. Sunday, according to the New Zealand military — roughly 18 hours after their encounter with the whale first began.

A Nerve-Wracking Final Approach

Even the rescue itself carried its own tension, as the massive container ship closed in on their tiny life raft. "It was wonderful, wonderful, and just a terrible, terrible ending — but luckily no loss of life," Jeremy Cooper recalled. Within half an hour, though, the sailors had climbed a ladder to safety, sharing coffee and conversation with the ship's captain — a jarring but welcome return to normalcy after a night spent fighting the sea.

Officials Praise a Textbook Rescue

Rescue Coordination Centre Operations Manager Mike Clulow commended both the rescue team and the yacht's crew for their handling of the crisis. "This was a well-coordinated and executed rescue," Clulow said. "The crew of the yacht did all the right things, and it was unfortunate to have struck a whale in open water. They were well prepared and the early activation of their EPIRB (Emergency Position-Indicating Radio Beacon) was key to helping get them to safety. It is an excellent reminder that being prepared when going to sea can save your life."

A Species Already Under Pressure

Adult male sperm whales measure between 50 and 60 feet long. The species is classified as "vulnerable" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, reproducing only once every five to seven years and facing significant population decline driven by threats including noise pollution, plastic consumption and ship strikes.

Not an Isolated Incident

This encounter near New Zealand marks at least the second time in under two months that a whale has sunk a boat. In July, a whale surfacing for air slammed into a New Jersey fire department's boat, sinking the vessel with firefighters still aboard. Someone nearby on a personal watercraft, along with another boater, helped pull the firefighters from the water.

For the Tai Tam's crew, a planned Pacific holiday voyage instead became a harrowing lesson in just how quickly the ocean can turn, and how much the right preparation can matter when the unexpected finally strikes.
