Throughout the 2016 election, immigration served as a central focal point of the Trump campaign. The then-future president vowed to build a wall along the Southern border in order to halt illegal entry into the United States.
At this time, Trump is currently seeking $5 billion dollars from Congress to fully fund his wall. The president and much of his base views building the wall as a critical measure of border security. Democrats and other critics of President Trump insist that constructing a wall will only engender waste and ineffectiveness as it pertains to border security.
