The accused Southport Shooter has been identified as Nigel Edge, a former Marine. His given name was Sean Debevoise before he changed it to Nigel Edge. 

He once attended the 2012 CMT Music Awards as country star Kellie Pickler’s date. Edge, 39, is now facing multiple charges after allegedly opening fire at a popular waterfront restaurant in North Carolina, leaving three people dead and five others injured.

According to CBS News, the deadly incident occurred on Saturday night at the American Fish Company restaurant along the Cape Fear River. Authorities say Edge parked a boat near the dockside bar around 9:30 p.m. before opening fire into a crowd of patrons.

Southport Police Chief Todd Coring described the attack as “highly premeditated.” Edge attempted to flee by boat toward Oak Island but was intercepted and detained by the U.S. Coast Guard. He now faces charges including three counts of first-degree murder, five counts of attempted first-degree murder, and five counts of assault with a deadly weapon.

Brunswick County District Attorney Jon David confirmed Edge was heavily armed, carrying a short-barreled AR rifle equipped with a suppressor, folding stock, and scope. “This was a planned, targeted act of violence,” David said.

From Red Carpet to Courtroom

Long before the Southport tragedy, Edge—then known as Sean DeBevoise—made headlines for his public appearance with Kellie Pickler at the CMT Awards in 2012. Wearing his Marine uniform and accompanied by his service dog Rusty, Edge praised the singer: “She is the most sincere person I know. She is an angel.”

The two had reportedly met at a charity event for veterans who had been wounded in combat. They reportedly only had one date. 

In 2025, Edge filed more than a dozen lawsuits against Oak Island Police, Generations Chruch, Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center, and singer Kellie Pickler.

 Edge filed a bizarre lawsuit earlier this year, accusing Pickler of attempting to poison him at the 2012 awards show. According to the New York Post, he claimed she offered him a “tainted glass of Jim Beam whiskey,” which he refused to drink. The case was later dismissed.

Bizarre Lawsuits

He filed four civil suits against the Department of Veterans Affairs. The latest suit against the VA was filed on September 24, 2025. According to the court documents, he claims Veterans Affairs caused him “physical and psychological damage under their care.”

He claimed Generations Church was “trafficking [Edge]” and attempted to “murder [Edge] by poisoning.” He also alleged that the church was using hidden cameras to sabotage his life.

His lawsuit against Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center alleges that the care he received was really “attempted murder.” He accused the staff of trying to murder him because they found out that Edge “survived an uninitiated horrendous hate crime by the LGBQT White Supremacists” when he was serving in Iraq.

Accused Southport Shooter had a Troubled Background

Edge, a combat veteran, was wounded in Iraq during multiple IED attacks and claimed to suffer from severe PTSD. Over the years, he filed a string of lawsuits alleging outlandish conspiracies involving churches, hospitals, and even government agencies.

In one court filing, he alleged a plot by “LGBTQ White Supremacists” to kill him.

His writings, including the self-published book Headshot: Betrayal of a Nation, detailed both his injuries and his growing paranoia. Law enforcement officials have described him as unstable and dangerous.

Ongoing Investigation

Southport officials, with assistance from North Carolina’s State Bureau of Investigation, are continuing to piece together Edge’s motives. Authorities have said they do not believe there is any ongoing threat to the public.

As the story develops, the bizarre overlap between Edge’s past connection to Pickler and his alleged role in a mass shooting underscores the complexities of trauma, mental illness, and violence.
