SpaceX Crew Dragon Bringing NASA Astronauts Home After 9-Months in Space

SpaceX Crew Dragon williams and wilmore

NASA astronauts Sunita "Suni" Williams and Barry "Butch" Wilmore were initially scheduled to spend only eight days aboard the International Space Station (ISS). However, due to technical failures with Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft, their return was indefinitely delayed. Now, after nine months in space, the pair is finally set to come home aboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule.

On Friday night, a SpaceX rocket successfully launched from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida to bring the astronauts back.

NASA announced the mission’s success on X, stating: “Have a great time in space, y’all! #Crew10 lifted off from @NASAKennedy at 7:03 pm ET (2303 UTC) on Friday, March 14.” SpaceX also confirmed the launch, writing: “Liftoff of Crew-1.”

Boeing Starliner’s Technical Failures

Williams and Wilmore originally launched on June 5, 2024, aboard Boeing's Starliner, which was meant to serve as an alternative to SpaceX Crew Dragon for future ISS missions. The mission was supposed to last just over a week, primarily to test Starliner’s performance.

However, upon arrival at the ISS, the spacecraft encountered severe malfunctions, including:

  • Five helium leaks
  • Five dead maneuvering thrusters
  • A malfunctioning propellant valve

These issues rendered the Starliner unsafe for a return journey. Despite months of troubleshooting, NASA and Boeing determined that the spacecraft should return to Earth without a crew.

By September 2024, NASA decided that Williams and Wilmore would remain on the ISS until another solution was arranged.

SpaceX Crew Dragon: The New Ride Home

The astronauts weren’t alone during their extended stay. In September, NASA astronaut Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Alexander Gorbunov joined them on the ISS.

Eventually, NASA decided that all four would return aboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule. The capsule, which had been docked at the ISS since September 2024, will bring them back to Earth, landing off the coast of Florida by mid-March.

Political Controversy Surrounding the Delay

The prolonged stay in space has drawn political speculation. Former U.S. President Donald Trump and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk suggested that the astronauts were deliberately left in space for political reasons. Musk claimed that SpaceX had previously offered to bring them home but was ignored.

However, European Space Agency astronaut Andreas Mogensen refuted these claims, explaining that the astronauts were always scheduled to return with Crew-9, making a separate rescue mission unnecessary.

Wilmore also dismissed the political theories, stating in a news conference from space that politics played no role in the delay.

Life Aboard the ISS for Nine Months

Spending months in a confined space with limited human interaction can take a toll on mental health.

Williams and Wilmore have openly discussed missing their families, but they have remained committed to their work. Extended stays in space can lead to stress, sleep disturbances, and mood shifts, making psychological resilience crucial.

Now, as their long-awaited return nears, the astronauts look forward to reuniting with their loved ones and adjusting back to life on Earth—where they will finally have more room to move than aboard the ISS.

Meanwhile, Musk has continued pushing his long-term vision for space travel.

SpaceX’s website boasts: “Starship is the world’s most powerful launch vehicle ever developed, capable of carrying up to 150 metric tons fully reusable and 250 metric tons expendable.”

New Chapters in Space Travel

Musk, who has been vocal about his goal of sending humans to Mars, was recently seen at the White House wearing an "Occupy Mars" shirt. He reiterated his vision: “I can’t think of anything more exciting than going out there and being among the stars.”

Musk recently announced that SpaceX’s Starship will embark on its first mission to Mars by the end of 2026. The mission will include Optimus, Tesla’s humanoid robot. If successful, Musk predicts that humans could reach Mars as early as 2029, though he admitted that 2031 is a more realistic timeline.

While NASA and Boeing continue to resolve the challenges with Starliner, SpaceX’s Crew Dragon remains a vital transport link for astronauts traveling to and from the ISS.

With Musk’s growing ambitions for interplanetary travel, the coming years could mark a new era in human space exploration.
