A flawless arc carved across the Florida sky early Saturday as SpaceX launches Cygnus XL cargo, sending a massive resupply vessel racing toward orbit—before pulling off a near-perfect rocket landing just minutes later.

Liftoff From Florida Carries Tons of Supplies

A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket thundered skyward from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station at 7:41 a.m. EDT (1141 GMT), ferrying Northrop Grumman’s upgraded Cygnus XL spacecraft toward the International Space Station.

The mission, designated NG-24, marks the 24th resupply flight conducted by Northrop Grumman for NASA.

“And liftoff! Science and supplies soaring to the International Space Station aboard the S.S. Steven R. Nagel,” NASA spokesperson Sandra Jones said during live coverage.

The spacecraft carries the name of Steven R. Nagel, a veteran of four space shuttle missions who logged more than 720 hours in space before his death in 2014 at age 67.

A Heavy Payload With a Historic Name

Like a cosmic delivery truck packed to the brim, the Cygnus XL freighter is hauling roughly 11,000 pounds (4,990 kilograms) of scientific equipment and essential supplies for astronauts aboard the station.

The “XL” designation reflects its expanded capacity—far exceeding the original Cygnus model, which could carry about 8,500 pounds.

Once in orbit, the spacecraft is expected to arrive at the ISS on Monday, April 13. At 12:50 p.m. EDT, it will be captured by the station’s robotic arm, Canadarm2, in a carefully choreographed maneuver high above Earth.

Rocket Booster Nails Precision Landing

Even as the cargo ship pressed onward, attention briefly snapped back to Earth. About eight minutes after liftoff, the Falcon 9’s first stage executed a pinpoint landing at a SpaceX pad in Cape Canaveral—another example of reusable rocket precision that has become the company’s hallmark.

This booster was no stranger to the skies. Saturday’s mission marked its seventh flight, having previously supported missions including NG-23, NASA’s Crew-11 astronaut flight, the Axiom Space Ax-4 mission, and three Starlink launches.

Journey Continues in Orbit

Roughly 14 minutes after launch, the Cygnus XL separated cleanly from the Falcon 9’s upper stage, slipping into its initial orbit. Within an hour, it is expected to deploy its solar arrays—unfurling like metallic wings—to power the rest of its journey.

This marks only the second flight of the upgraded Cygnus XL. Its predecessor launched last September and remained docked at the ISS for six months before departing on March 12, ultimately burning up in Earth’s atmosphere.

Part of a Global Cargo Network

Cygnus is one of four robotic cargo vehicles servicing the ISS, alongside Japan’s HTV-X, Russia’s Progress, and SpaceX’s Dragon capsule. Of the four, only Dragon is reusable; the others meet fiery ends upon re-entry, their missions concluding in blazing descents through Earth’s atmosphere.
