In a move blending caffeine with code, the Starbucks beta app in ChatGPT is redefining how customers discover their next drink — not from a menu, but from a mood.

On Wednesday, Starbucks announced the launch of a beta integration within ChatGPT, allowing users to generate personalized drink ideas through conversational prompts. The feature marks another step in the company’s broader digital reinvention, aimed at drawing customers back into its cafes.

Turning cravings into conversations

To access the feature, users must enable the Starbucks app through ChatGPT’s app directory and include “@Starbucks” in their prompt. From there, the chatbot acts like a virtual barista, helping customers customize beverages and even choose a pickup location.

However, the process stops just short of a full transaction. Orders must still be finalized through the Starbucks mobile app or website — a deliberate boundary for a company deeply invested in its loyalty ecosystem.

“Customers aren’t always starting with a menu,” said Paul Riedel, senior vice president of digital and loyalty. “They’re starting with a feeling.”

The new tool, he added, is designed to meet customers at that spark of inspiration and guide them toward a drink that fits.

A digital push to revive in-store traffic

The ChatGPT integration is the latest piece of Starbucks’ “Back to Starbucks” turnaround strategy, a multi-pronged effort to reverse declining foot traffic in the U.S.

The company has reintroduced seating in cafes, streamlined its menu, and revamped its loyalty program with tiered rewards. At the same time, it has leaned heavily into digital discovery — highlighting trending drinks and even surfacing “secret menu” items within its app.

This focus on exploration is particularly aimed at younger consumers, especially Gen Z, who gravitate toward unique and customizable beverages more than previous generations.

Encouragingly for the company, early signs suggest momentum is shifting. After two years of declining visits, Starbucks reported an uptick in customer transactions during its fiscal first quarter ending Dec. 28.

AI partnerships reshape retail experiences

The Starbucks beta app in ChatGPT is not the company’s first venture into generative AI. Last year, it introduced Green Dot Assist, an AI-powered tool for baristas built using Microsoft Azure’s OpenAI platform.

Across the retail landscape, other major players are also experimenting with AI-driven shopping experiences. Companies like Walmart, Etsy, and Booking.com are testing ways to integrate browsing and purchasing directly into conversational interfaces.

Like a barista who remembers your order before you speak, AI is increasingly anticipating consumer desires — turning everyday choices into curated experiences.

As Starbucks pours its brand into this evolving technology, the question now is whether inspiration alone can translate into sustained customer loyalty — or if the human touch behind the counter will remain its strongest brew.
