Winter storms have been no joke in 2022. Just in this year alone, winter storms have wreaked significant damage on the East Coast of the United States. Likewise, airlines have found themselves forced to postpone and even cancel flights altogether. This has created a situation at airports where many travelers wound up stranded and then had trouble with rebooking. Governors in states like Virginia and others hit hard by storms are issuing declarations of emergencies. Americans in the midst of these winter storms are also facing advice to steer clear of being on the roads unless it's absolutely necessary. As of right now, though, news is breaking about just how much of a negative impact winter storms are having on the state of Tennessee.

A closer look at the impacts of storms in the Volunteer State

In Tennessee, there are more than 66,000 residents who currently are going without electrical power. This is according to Memphis Light, Gas, and Water (MLGW). Unfortunately, some Tennesseans have remained in this predicament for days on end now. Certain power lines are completely knocked out; meanwhile, snow and ice are covering numerous power lines, tree limbs, and other surrounding things. MLGW is sharing updates with the public. Currently, the utility service maintains that 1,000 people are hard at work to get Volunteer State residents' power back on. However, it's not going to happen overnight. As things currently stand, the latest estimate for when everyone covered by MLGW should have their power back on is Thursday, February 10.

Preparing for snowstorms

Needless to say, being caught in the middle of a winter storm isn't very much fun for anyone. Nonetheless, there are still a series of methods people can employ to prepare themselves and minimize the damage. Checking insulation in your home, making sure your heating system works, and taking outdoor furniture indoors are some great steps. Likewise, locating snow equipment such as shovels, snowblowers, etc. is always helpful before the winter storm arrives. To prepare for power outages, it's always worthwhile to ensure you have a working generator with plenty of gas. Being certain of access to warm clothes, warm blankets, and multiple flashlights is also known to make a positive difference.
