In a move that rippled through the global textile industry, The Lycra files for chapter 11, signaling a dramatic restructuring effort aimed at shedding a heavy debt load while keeping operations intact.

The stretch-fabric giant, The Lycra Company, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Tuesday in Houston, Texas, seeking to offload approximately $1.2 billion in debt, according to court filings.

A Financial Lifeline and a Fast-Track Exit

Like a runner tightening laces mid-race, the company is attempting to stabilize itself without stopping production.

Lenders have agreed to inject $75 million in fresh financing while wiping out the majority of Lycra’s $1.53 billion in existing debt. The company emphasized that the restructuring will not disrupt its manufacturing operations, nor will it impact customers, suppliers, or employees.

Backed by near-unanimous lender support, Lycra described the process as a “prepackaged” restructuring—one designed for speed and precision. The company expects to emerge from bankruptcy in as little as 45 days.

Years of Strain Behind the Filing

The road to this moment has been long and uneven.

Based in Wilmington, Delaware, Lycra has faced mounting financial pressure since its 2019 acquisition by Ruyi Textile and Fashion International Group Limited.

By 2022, lenders had seized control of the business after it defaulted on its obligations. But even under new ownership, the company struggled to regain its footing.

Court documents point to a convergence of challenges: declining demand, intensifying competition from lower-cost generic spandex, fluctuating U.S. tariffs, and ongoing legal disputes tied to its former Chinese ownership.

Together, these forces pulled the company taut—until it finally snapped into restructuring.

A Legacy Brand Under Pressure

Founded in 1958 as part of DuPont de Nemours Inc., Lycra pioneered the creation of spandex, revolutionizing industries from fashion to athletics.

Today, it remains one of the world’s leading innovators in stretch fiber technology.

The company operates eight manufacturing facilities, three research laboratories, and 11 offices spanning North America, Europe, Asia, and South America. Its global workforce totals approximately 2,000 employees.

Despite the bankruptcy filing, Lycra’s message is clear: business continues as usual.
