The Vatican’s UFO And Alien Life Position Comes Into Focus As Attention Turns To Its Observatory’s Collaboration With The “LUCIFER” Infrared Instrument

By Samuel López | USA Herald - As the United States government continues releasing unprecedented volumes of UAP-related documents through the Trump administration’s Presidential Unsealing and Reporting System for UAP Encounters — known as PURSUE — attention is now shifting toward an institution that has spent centuries studying the heavens long before modern governments acknowledged UFOs publicly.

The Vatican.

For decades, rumors, conspiracy theories, theological debates, and intelligence-linked speculation have swirled around the Catholic Church’s position on extraterrestrial life, UFO phenomena, and whether the Holy See possesses deeper knowledge about non-human intelligence than it has publicly acknowledged.

Now, as disclosure discussions intensify worldwide, the Vatican’s long-documented interest in astronomy, alien life, and cosmic theology is drawing renewed scrutiny from researchers, journalists, theologians, and UFO investigators alike.

And unlike many governments, the Vatican has never entirely dismissed the possibility of extraterrestrial intelligence.

In fact, some of its highest-ranking astronomers have openly stated for years that belief in alien life is not incompatible with Catholic doctrine.

That reality has created one of the most fascinating intersections between religion, science, disclosure politics, and modern UFO lore.

At the center of this discussion is the Vatican Observatory — one of the oldest astronomical research institutions in the world.

Originally founded in the 16th century and formally reorganized under Pope Leo XIII in 1891, the observatory serves as the Vatican’s official astronomical research institution. Today, its headquarters remain in Castel Gandolfo near Rome, while its advanced research operations also extend into the United States through the Vatican Observatory Research Group in Arizona.

The Vatican’s primary American astronomical installation is the Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope — commonly referred to as the VATT — located atop Mount Graham within the Mount Graham International Observatory complex.

The telescope itself has become legendary within UFO circles.

Not because there is evidence it secretly tracks alien spacecraft, but because conspiracy theories surrounding the Vatican’s Arizona observatory have exploded online for years, particularly after public attention focused on the observatory’s collaboration with the “LUCIFER” infrared instrument — an acronym for the Large Binocular Telescope Near-infrared Utility with Camera and Integral Field Unit for Extragalactic Research.

That name alone fueled endless internet speculation that the Vatican was secretly preparing for extraterrestrial disclosure or monitoring incoming non-human entities.

In reality, the Vatican Observatory has publicly maintained that its mission is scientific, educational, and theological — not paranormal.

Still, the Vatican’s public comments regarding alien life have remained remarkably open compared to many religious institutions.

In 2008, Jesuit Father José Gabriel Funes, then director of the Vatican Observatory, publicly stated that belief in extraterrestrial life does not contradict Catholic doctrine. He famously referred to hypothetical extraterrestrials as “our brothers” within God’s creation and argued that humanity cannot place limits on God’s creative freedom.

Those comments reverberated worldwide.

Suddenly, one of the most powerful religious institutions on Earth was openly acknowledging the possibility that intelligent non-human beings could exist elsewhere in the universe without undermining Christianity.

Years later, Vatican astronomer Brother Guy Consolmagno — one of the Church’s most recognizable scientific voices — further fueled public fascination when he joked that he would baptize an extraterrestrial “if they asked.”

Though intended humorously, the statement became symbolic of the Vatican’s unusually flexible theological posture regarding alien life.

And now, with global disclosure discussions accelerating, the Vatican appears increasingly willing to engage the conversation publicly.

Just days ago, a Vatican parish hosted a public discussion examining UFOs, extraterrestrial intelligence, and modern disclosure movements amid growing attention surrounding newly released U.S. UAP files.

The event reportedly included discussion of military reports, congressional testimony, and longstanding rumors involving Vatican knowledge of UFO-related incidents.

That matters because for decades, UFO lore has repeatedly linked the Vatican to alleged hidden knowledge concerning non-human intelligence.

Among the most persistent stories are claims that Vatican officials were quietly informed about the alleged 1947 Roswell incident. Some theories suggest the Church possesses ancient archives containing references to celestial beings, anomalous aerial phenomena, or entities interpreted throughout history as angels, demons, or divine manifestations.

No credible evidence has publicly proven such claims.

But the speculation persists because the Vatican occupies a uniquely powerful position at the intersection of religion, philosophy, history, and astronomy.

Unlike governments that often frame UAP discussions primarily through national security lenses, the Vatican must confront a different question entirely:

If humanity encounters confirmed non-human intelligence, what would that mean spiritually?

Would extraterrestrials possess souls?

Would they require salvation?

Would they share moral consciousness?

Would humanity remain unique within creation?

These questions are no longer confined to science fiction.

They are now being openly debated by theologians, astronomers, philosophers, and disclosure researchers alike.

The Vatican’s observatory itself reflects this unusual fusion of faith and scientific inquiry.

While many mistakenly assume the Church opposes advanced science, the Vatican Observatory has spent decades contributing to legitimate astronomical research involving cosmology, meteorites, galactic formation, and planetary science.

Its researchers collaborate internationally and regularly publish scientific work.

Yet UFO lore surrounding the Vatican continues growing precisely because the institution studies the cosmos while simultaneously serving as one of the world’s most influential spiritual authorities.

That combination creates enormous symbolic weight.

In disclosure communities, some theorists believe governments may eventually rely on religious institutions to help stabilize public reaction if definitive proof of non-human intelligence emerges.

That speculation intensified after multiple pastors and religious figures recently claimed government-linked discussions involving disclosure preparation had occurred behind closed doors.

No evidence has publicly confirmed coordinated Vatican involvement in such efforts.

But historically, the Vatican has shown far greater willingness than many assume to contemplate extraterrestrial life within a theological framework.

And that openness may become increasingly significant as disclosure narratives evolve.

Because the deeper humanity looks into the UAP phenomenon, the more the discussion appears to move beyond aerospace technology alone.

The conversation is becoming existential.

Philosophical.

Spiritual.

Civilizational.

And perhaps that is why the Vatican’s role in this unfolding conversation now feels more important than ever.

For centuries, humanity looked to the Church to answer questions about creation itself.

Now, as governments release files discussing unidentified craft, alleged non-human intelligence, and phenomena that challenge humanity’s understanding of reality, one of the world’s oldest religious institutions may once again find itself confronting a question civilization has never fully answered:

If we are not alone, what does that mean for mankind?
