Tim Cook Steps Down As Apple CEO After 15 Historic Years — Hardware Chief John Ternus Takes Helm September 1 In Long-Planned Succession

CUPERTINO, Calif. — Apple is turning the page on the Tim Cook era. In a stunning succession announcement that reverberated through Wall Street and Silicon Valley, the company confirmed Monday that longtime Chief Executive Tim Cook will step down on September 1 and hand the reins to John Ternus, Apple's senior vice president of hardware engineering and the quiet force behind many of the company's biggest product launches.

Cook, 65, will transition to the role of executive chairman, remaining on Apple's board of directors. Ternus, 51, becomes the first new CEO at the world's most valuable public company since Cook succeeded Steve Jobs in August 2011, weeks before Jobs' death.

A Long-Planned Handoff, Confirmed In Careful Words

Apple's board said the transition had been "thoughtfully planned over a multi-year succession process" and was approved unanimously. The company framed the move as a natural progression rather than a rupture, emphasizing continuity in the products, privacy positions and operational playbook that defined Cook's 15-year run.

"There is no greater honor than leading this incredible company," Cook said in the announcement. "I have decided that the time is right to pass the baton." He added that he will "work closely with John over the summer" to ensure a seamless handoff before stepping into the chairman role.

Ternus, a soft-spoken engineer who joined Apple in 2001 and became head of hardware engineering in 2021, said he was "humbled and honored" to take over what he called "the most extraordinary company in the world."

Who Is John Ternus?

To casual Apple watchers, Ternus may seem to have arrived from nowhere. To insiders, his ascension has felt almost inevitable. A former competitive swimmer who once wondered if he "belonged" at Apple, Ternus has spent more than two decades rising through the engineering ranks. His portfolio has grown to include the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, AirPods and the Vision Pro headset — essentially the full hardware lineup that drives the bulk of the company's roughly $400 billion in annual revenue.

Colleagues describe him as a classic Apple product obsessive — more comfortable in a design lab than on a conference stage, though he has become a familiar face at Apple's high-production launch events, introducing new iPads and Macs in crisp, understated fashion. Unlike Cook, who built a reputation as a supply chain wizard, Ternus is a product-first leader in the mold of Jobs.

To make room for his new responsibilities, Apple said hardware engineering oversight will be split, with semiconductor chief Johny Srouji expanding his portfolio and longtime hardware executive Tom Marieb assuming more direct day-to-day responsibility.

A CEO Inheriting A Company At A Crossroads

Ternus is stepping into the job at one of the most challenging moments in Apple's modern history. The company is racing to catch up in generative artificial intelligence, where rivals Google, Microsoft and OpenAI have seized the public imagination. Apple Intelligence, unveiled in 2024, has been criticized as uneven and late, and investors will be watching closely to see whether a hardware-driven CEO can deliver a credible AI vision.

At the same time, Ternus takes over amid continued friction with regulators in Washington, Brussels and Beijing. Antitrust cases aimed at the App Store, the Justice Department's ongoing lawsuit alleging iPhone monopolization, and sweeping new European rules forcing Apple to open up core services have already reshaped parts of its business model. Then there are the tariffs — a punishing chapter that saw Apple shift significant production out of China toward India and Vietnam, and that was recently upended when the Supreme Court ruled earlier this year that Congress, not the president, controls such duties.

And looming over everything is the Vision Pro bet. Apple's $3,500 spatial computer has struggled to find a mass audience, and Ternus, as the executive who helped birth the product, will be closely watched as the company decides whether to double down or pivot toward lighter, cheaper smart glasses.

Wall Street Reacts — And Reads The Tea Leaves

Apple shares wobbled in after-hours trading before settling into a narrow trading band, a measured reaction that analysts said reflected years of succession signaling rather than surprise. "This is the most telegraphed CEO transition in tech," said one veteran Apple analyst. "The only real question was whether it would be Ternus or someone out of services or operations. By choosing the hardware chief, Apple is saying the next chapter is still about great products — just with much more AI inside them."

The market also took note of what Apple's announcement did not include: any hint of new product directions, AI acquisitions or a strategic reset. Analysts read that as a signal that Ternus intends to be evaluated on execution, not rhetoric, during his first year at the helm.

What It Means For Americans

For the roughly 150,000 U.S. Apple customers who upgrade iPhones every day, the near-term change is likely to be invisible. The iPhone 17 is expected this fall as scheduled, iOS 20 is in development, and Apple's privacy-forward positioning is considered central to the brand Ternus has pledged to protect.

Longer term, the choice of a hardware-first CEO suggests Apple will continue to bet that owning the chips, cameras and sensors inside its devices — rather than scaling massive cloud AI models — is how it will compete. That bet has made Apple one of the most profitable companies in history. It will now fall to Ternus to prove it can keep working in an industry increasingly defined by large language models and generative AI.

Cook, for his part, is not going far. As executive chairman, he will continue to chair board meetings and, associates say, remain deeply involved in government relations, philanthropy and the next phase of Apple's campus build-out. He also retains one of the most closely watched stock positions on Wall Street.

"Tim leaves behind a company that is bigger, stronger, and more global than ever," Ternus said. "My job is to make sure the next chapter is just as remarkable as the last."

That next chapter begins on September 1.
